Virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) runs desktop sessions or applications on centrally managed computing resources and streams the interactive experience to users’ devices. It can simplify desktop management and support remote access, but it is a system to design and operate—not an automatic security, cost, or performance fix. The right choice depends on the workload, delivery model, identity and network environment, licensing, and who will run the service.

What is virtual desktop infrastructure?

VDI delivers a desktop operating system or application from computing resources managed by an organization, cloud provider, or service partner. The user interacts with that desktop on an endpoint device, while processing and much of the desktop environment run elsewhere.

A VDI deployment is made up of connected services, not just a client app. Microsoft’s Azure virtual desktop architecture overview, dated March 26, 2026, describes components including host pools and session hosts, endpoint devices, identity, network connectivity, storage, and monitoring. Its example uses hub-and-spoke networking, ExpressRoute, Microsoft Entra ID and Active Directory Domain Services, Azure Files or Azure NetApp Files, and Log Analytics. Those are Azure design examples, not universal requirements for every VDI platform.

As Microsoft Learn puts it, “Azure provides several virtual desktop solutions to meet different organizational needs.” The practical implication is that “virtual desktop” can describe different delivery and operating models.

How does VDI work?

A user signs in from an endpoint. Identity services authenticate the user and determine access; a control plane assigns or locates the desktop or application; a session host runs the workload; and a display protocol carries the interactive session between the host and endpoint. Storage holds operating system images, profiles, and user data, while monitoring helps administrators diagnose service health and performance.

The exact division of responsibility varies. A cloud provider may operate some platform services, while the customer or a partner manages images, identity integration, policies, host capacity, and user support. For example, Citrix’s Azure reference architecture covers control-plane and resource-location decisions. AWS WorkSpaces Core requires a customer-managed or technology-partner control plane, rather than providing a complete end-user desktop management layer by itself.

Which virtual desktop model fits: shared sessions or dedicated desktops?

Compare the experience users need before comparing product names. Shared or pooled capacity can serve multiple users or recreate desktops from managed images; dedicated desktops assign a persistent environment to an individual. Published applications deliver applications without necessarily presenting a full desktop.

Model How it works Questions to resolve
Multisession desktop Multiple user sessions can share a session host. Azure Virtual Desktop supports multisession Windows desktops. Do applications support concurrent sessions, and can capacity and policies be sized for users’ peak activity?
Published application Users access selected applications rather than a complete desktop. Azure Virtual Desktop supports published applications. Can users do their work with only the required applications, and how will application data and dependencies be handled?
Dedicated Cloud PC Windows 365 automatically creates an individual Cloud PC for each assigned user. Does each person need a separate desktop that remains assigned to them, and what management and licensing terms apply?
Partner-managed or other platform A provider or partner may combine cloud infrastructure with a separate control plane and management services. Who owns the control plane, directory integration, image lifecycle, support, and incident response?

Microsoft’s architecture overview distinguishes Azure Virtual Desktop’s multisession and published-app capabilities from Windows 365’s individually assigned Cloud PCs. Neither model is inherently cheaper or better: usage patterns, application needs, licensing, management, and required availability determine the fit.

What should an organization assess before choosing VDI?

Start with user groups and actual applications, then validate the infrastructure and operating model against them. A broad platform comparison is less useful than checking whether the intended users can complete their real work, with their real peripherals and data, at expected concurrency.

  1. Inventory workloads and users. Record each application, its compatibility constraints, compute or graphics needs, peripherals, session behavior, and user group. Separate office-style use from workloads with unusual resource or latency needs.
  2. Choose the desktop experience. Decide whether users need shared multisession desktops, published applications, dedicated personal desktops, or different models for different groups.
  3. Map identity and access. Document directory services, tenant or domain design, authentication, authorization, and access policies. Confirm how those services connect to the chosen platform.
  4. Design the network path. Identify where users connect from, connectivity to the desktop environment, bandwidth and latency considerations, and network access controls. Test from representative locations rather than assuming a centrally hosted session will feel responsive everywhere.
  5. Plan images, storage, and user data. Decide how desktop images are maintained, where profiles and files live, and how data is protected, backed up, and recovered.
  6. Estimate concurrency and capacity. Use expected peak usage and representative workload tests to inform host sizing. Plan scaling and monitoring alongside capacity; do not rely on a generic benchmark as a substitute for testing your applications.
  7. Assign operational ownership. Specify who patches hosts, updates images, manages identity and access, monitors service health, handles incidents, and supports users.
  8. Validate security and resilience. Review endpoint controls, permissions, network boundaries, logging, recovery requirements, and the failure scenarios the organization must withstand.

Microsoft’s architecture guidance treats identity, connectivity, host pools, storage, endpoints, and monitoring as design concerns. Its Zero Trust guidance for Azure Virtual Desktop applies security and governance principles to an actual deployment context.

What does VDI cost?

There is no single universal VDI price. For Azure Virtual Desktop, Microsoft describes cost as a combination of user access rights and Azure infrastructure consumption. Infrastructure can include session-host virtual machines, operating-system and data storage, network bandwidth, and shared resources. Compute can be a major cost component, and Microsoft identifies autoscaling as one method of aligning host capacity with demand.

Licensing eligibility matters as much as the infrastructure estimate. Microsoft lists eligible Windows and Microsoft 365 licenses for internal users; external commercial users require enrollment in per-user access pricing. Confirm the applicable licensing terms for the organization, region, user type, and deployment before budgeting. Microsoft’s Azure Virtual Desktop pricing page, cost-estimation guidance, and licensing guidance explain these components.

For AWS WorkSpaces, the commercial model can differ by option. AWS describes monthly and hourly billing for partner solutions, and says partner-solution licensing is excluded from WorkSpaces pricing. Bundles are preset configurations; managed instances give customers or partners more control over operating system, instance type, and storage. Any comparison should include the partner software and operating costs as well as the underlying service. See the AWS WorkSpaces pricing page and WorkSpaces Core documentation.

Build an estimate from the planned region, host sizes, storage, network use, concurrency, hours of operation, access licensing, and partner software. Model both ordinary and peak usage; a low average session count does not establish that the service can meet busy-period demand.

What does AWS WorkSpaces Core require?

WorkSpaces Core is an infrastructure option for virtual desktop solutions, not a complete standalone desktop experience. AWS says customers need either a technology partner’s control plane or their own customer-managed control plane. The design also needs a pixel-streaming protocol and appropriate directory integration.

Does centralizing desktops make VDI more secure?

Central management can give an organization more consistent control over desktop images, access, and monitoring, but it does not make a deployment secure by itself. Misconfigured identity, overly broad permissions, weak endpoint protections, exposed network paths, or inadequate logging can still create risk.

Security planning should cover authentication and authorization, endpoint posture, network access, host and image maintenance, data location, monitoring, and recovery. Apply the organization’s governance requirements to both the centralized environment and the devices users connect from. Microsoft’s Zero Trust guidance provides an Azure Virtual Desktop example; it should be treated as implementation guidance rather than a guarantee of security.

What should be in a VDI platform comparison?

Use the same decision criteria for every candidate, and identify which party operates each layer. Product capability and responsibility can vary by service, edition, region, partner arrangement, and supported version.

  • Desktop model: multisession or pooled desktops, published applications, dedicated desktops, or another delivery model.
  • Workload fit: application compatibility, compute and graphics needs, peripherals, and expected session behavior. No universal workload benchmark establishes the right platform for every organization.
  • Control plane and operations: provider-managed, customer-managed, or partner-managed components; image, patch, and support ownership.
  • Identity and networking: directory integration, tenant or domain design, connectivity, and access controls.
  • Licensing and total cost: user access rights, infrastructure consumption, partner software, and actual usage patterns.
  • Security, resilience, and monitoring: configuration, telemetry, backup and recovery planning, and operational accountability.
  • Compatibility lifecycle: supported operating systems, host configurations, and platform component versions.

For Citrix deployments, check the current Citrix DaaS system requirements for the planned VDA, operating system, and host configuration. Compatibility information is version-sensitive; do not treat a past support listing as timeless.

Do users need thin-client computers?

No. An endpoint device is part of the design, but a thin-client computer is only one possible endpoint. Choose devices based on peripheral support, endpoint management, user needs, and the platform’s requirements. Selecting a thin client does not provide the desktop service, control plane, licensing, or the network and identity components VDI depends on.
