VAST tells a video player what ad to load; VPAID was an interface that let an executable ad communicate with the player. They were complementary, not competing formats: VPAID could add interactive behavior to an ad delivered through a response such as VAST. VPAID is now deprecated. For new implementations, IAB Tech Lab points to SIMID for interactive media and OMID for measurement, while VAST remains the ad-response standard.
What does VAST do?
VAST, or Video Ad Serving Template, is an XML-based standard ad-response format. It transfers ad metadata and instructions from an ad server to a digital video player, helping the player identify and handle the ad response. The Interactive Advertising Bureau says VAST was initially launched in 2008. IAB’s VAST overview describes its role and history.
VAST does not, by itself, mean that an ad is interactive. Its basic ad formats are relatively simple and non-executable. The specific VAST version and features supported by both the serving system and player determine what a given implementation can handle. IAB Tech Lab’s VAST specification page lists the standard’s version history and updates.

VPAID, or Video Player-Ad Interface Definition, defined a common interface between a video player and an executable ad unit. It enabled interactive in-stream ad behavior and allowed the ad unit to communicate playback and user-interaction information through the player. It was an additional interface layer, not a substitute for the ad response that tells the player what to load. IAB Tech Lab’s VPAID page explains the standard’s role.

That executable behavior came with dependencies: the player needed to implement the interface, and the creative had to be compatible with the player’s runtime. A VAST response alone did not guarantee that a VPAID creative would run.
VAST and VPAID compared
| Question | VAST | VPAID |
|---|---|---|
| Main role | Ad-response format carrying metadata and instructions to the video player. | Interface between the player and an executable ad unit. |
| Does it execute creative behavior? | VAST alone does not provide rich executable interactivity. | Yes, when the creative and player support the interface. |
| Historical measurement role | Later versions include integrations for verification and measurement, including Open Measurement support noted in the version history. | Could report playback and user interactions through the player interface. |
| Status | Maintained through versioned specifications and addenda; IAB Tech Lab lists VAST 4.3 and CTV updates. | Deprecated; IAB Tech Lab identifies SIMID and OMID as successors for interactive media and measurement use cases. |
| Main implementation check | Confirm that the ad server and player support the same required VAST version and features. | Confirm player, creative, and delivery-environment compatibility; do not assume universal execution. |
These are distinct roles, not two interchangeable ways to package the same thing. “VAST” identifies an ad-response format; it does not establish that an ad is interactive. VPAID historically supplied an executable interaction layer that could work alongside an ad response.
Why VPAID compatibility can be a problem
Executable ads add a runtime dependency that a basic video ad response does not. In its CTV Programmatic Guide, IAB Tech Lab notes that VPAID can slow loading or cause malfunctions, and that it has complicated measurement in environments such as server-side ad insertion (SSAI). In SSAI, ad insertion and playback are handled server-side, which can make an interface designed for communication with a player harder to support or measure reliably.
Legacy creative technology is another compatibility variable. IAB Tech Lab’s Video Tech FAQs gives the example of a Flash VPAID ad attempting to play in an HTML5 player. This is a specific incompatibility example, not evidence that every VPAID implementation fails in every HTML5 player. Test the creative format, runtime, player, and delivery setup as a combination.

- Exquisite and Fashionable: The electronic video greeting card is a portable commercial advertising method, which is exquisite and fashionable, demonstrating the company's strength and innovation.
- Pictures and Video Support: Pictures support JPEG, BMP, GIF, PNG, TIF and other formats for static picture display of various picture . Video supports MP4, AVL, MPEG, WMV, RM, RMVB, MKV, VOB, MOW, FL, V, ASF, DAT, 3GP, MPG, etc.
- Video Display: Individuals or companies can upload videos or corporate commercial advertisements to the video brochure for display, which is a very practical and popular commercial advertising trend.
- HD Video Playback: The optimal image proportion for playing is 4:3. The maximum support for full format 720P (1280x720) high definition video playback. 720P full code stream video does not need to be converted. It can be played directly and decoded smoothly at a high code rate.
What should teams use now?
For ad delivery, verify the VAST version and features supported by both ends of the integration. For new interactive-media use cases, evaluate SIMID; assess OMID separately when the requirement is measurement. IAB Tech Lab identifies SIMID and OMID as replacements for VPAID’s interactive and measurement use cases, respectively, but its materials do not establish universal vendor support. Confirm the required capabilities with the actual player, ad server, creative workflow, and measurement setup before deployment. IAB Tech Lab’s VPAID guidance outlines the transition.
Version history is useful context, but it is not proof of what a particular vendor has deployed. IAB Tech Lab lists VAST 4.2 as released in June 2019 with SIMID support, VAST 4.3 as released in December 2022, and a VAST CTV Addendum dated 2024. Its VAST page was last updated July 18, 2024. Check the current specification and the implementation documentation for the systems you use rather than assuming a version is universally supported. IAB Tech Lab’s VAST page provides the version history; the VAST Addendum 2024 gives the CTV update details.

Practical implementation checklist
- Identify the VAST version and specific features the ad server emits and the player accepts.
- For interactive ads, verify support for the chosen interface or successor standard across the player, creative, and serving workflow.
- For measurement, check the required measurement integration independently rather than inferring it from interactive-ad support.
- Test the target delivery environment, including CTV or SSAI where relevant, and test the actual creative runtime in the target player.
- Define what should happen when an interactive or measurement component cannot run, so the video ad can still be handled appropriately.
The standards direction is to separate the media file from interactive and verification components, helping preserve video playback where those components cannot execute. That separation makes it especially important to test fallback behavior as well as the ideal interactive path. IAB Tech Lab’s CTV guidance discusses these operational concerns.
