Vapor IO’s Kinetic Edge Alliance was announced as a way to make small, tower-adjacent data centers more like full-service edge sites: deployment partners would supply physical equipment and on-site expertise, while technology partners would contribute software and integrations. The alliance and rollout were described in a February 15, 2019 report; that account does not establish which partners or sites remain active today.
What Vapor IO announced in 2019
Data Center Knowledge reported that Vapor IO had formed the Kinetic Edge Alliance, a 12-company group including Vapor IO. Its premise was that putting a data-center enclosure near a cell tower was only part of an edge-computing deployment. Customers also need compute, connectivity, storage, networking, software, and people able to install and operate equipment.
The article described Vapor IO’s units as compact modular data centers located near cell tower sites. It reported a design capacity of up to 150 kW of equipment in a cylindrical enclosure nine feet in diameter. Those are specifications reported in 2019, not independently verified current product specifications. Data Center Knowledge’s February 15, 2019 report is the source for the announcement and the figures.

The report separated partners into deployment and technology roles. Deployment partners were expected to put physical equipment and technicians at sites; technology partners were described as contributing software solutions and API integrations. The distinction matters: a nearby facility can reduce the distance between compute and connected devices, but it does not by itself provide a complete service stack.

Cole Crawford, Vapor IO’s founder and CEO, summarized the category this way: “Our deployment partners are companies that are actually deploying real gear.” The quote describes the intended role at the time, not a current service commitment.
Technology partners
| Partner named in 2019 | Contribution described in the report |
|---|---|
| Seagate | Storage |
| Pluribus Networks | Network fabric across sites |
| Hitachi Vantara | IoT expertise |
| Detecon International | Technology for the transition to 5G |

Why put compute near a tower?
Placing compute close to connected devices can reduce the distance data must travel before it is processed, which is relevant when an application needs a fast response. Crawford argued that applications such as autonomous robotics could require decisions in under four milliseconds and that proximity would matter because the speed of light is finite. That was his technical rationale, not a measured latency result for the alliance’s sites. Actual application latency also depends on the network path, processing workload, and deployment configuration.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThe arrangement also addressed a practical operations question: whether an enterprise should rent space and provision and maintain its own servers, or use a more turnkey service assembled from infrastructure and technology partners. The report’s alliance model aimed to bring several pieces together, but it did not provide a universal service specification or establish that every listed capability was available at every location.

What the 2019 rollout claims do—and do not—show
The report said two Chicago locations had been operational for several months, a third was expected within six weeks, and a fourth by mid-year. It also described plans to enter five more markets by year-end and reach the top 30 U.S. metro markets within 18 months. Those statements are an announcement-era snapshot of reported sites and company plans, not evidence of later completion or current coverage.
Crawford also forecast, “We think this grows at an order of magnitude every 24 months,” referring to the company’s expected growth in locations. That was a 2019 forecast, not a verified result.

What to verify before evaluating an edge deployment
The alliance announcement is useful as a map of the capabilities a full-service edge deployment may need, but it is not a current vendor directory or procurement comparison. For a present-day project, verify the details that determine whether a site actually fits the workload:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Location and coverage: Confirm the specific sites, their proximity to users or devices, and available redundancy. Historical rollout plans do not prove current site availability.
- Compute model: Establish whether compute is rented as a service or whether your organization must buy, configure, and maintain server hardware. The report named servers and bare-metal compute, but no exact server model.
- Connectivity and software: Confirm what wireless services, orchestration, container or virtual-machine platforms, and integrations are currently offered at the relevant site.
- Storage and network design: Check what storage is available and how traffic moves between edge sites, core facilities, and cloud environments.
- Installation and support: Identify who installs equipment, provides on-site technicians, handles maintenance, and responds to outages under the service agreement.
The 2019 account does not establish current Kinetic Edge Alliance membership, operating status, deployment coverage, product availability, or referral programs. Treat its partner list and plans as historical context and confirm any present-day offering directly with the relevant providers.
