The Vantrue Nexus 5S is a four-channel dash cam built to record the road and two views of the cabin—not to deliver the highest possible road-video resolution. It combines front-facing and cabin-facing lenses in the front unit with a rear camera and a second cabin view in the rear unit. That makes it a strong fit for rideshare drivers and others who need interior coverage, but its bulky hardware, more involved installation, and 1944p front-video ceiling are meaningful trade-offs.
What the Vantrue Nexus 5S records
The system uses two camera units to record four angles: forward through the windshield, toward the front cabin, rearward through the back window, and toward the rear cabin. Vantrue lists four STARVIS 2 sensors. TechRadar gives the lenses fields of view of 158° front, 160° rear, 158° interior, and 160° rear interior. These overlapping views provide broad coverage, but they are not literal, gap-free 360-degree recording; the actual view depends on where the units are mounted and what the car’s interior blocks.

The front unit has a 3.19-inch display, according to Vantrue’s technical comparison. The manufacturer lists 1944p for the front stream and 1080p for the auxiliary streams, at 30fps. This is a coverage-first configuration, not a 4K/60fps road camera. If identifying distant road details is your main priority, compare the N5S with systems that emphasize higher-resolution front and rear footage.

Independent reviewers generally found the footage useful across the four angles, while their observations should not be treated as a guarantee that every license plate will be legible. TechRadar’s reviewer used a Vantrue-supplied unit and microSD card in an SUV for a couple of weeks, recording day and night journeys. The reviewer described footage from all angles as solid and low-light performance as dependable, and found the 5GHz file transfer and app helpful for managing multiple streams. Parking features were not evaluated because the camera was not hardwired. Read TechRadar’s hands-on review.

Digital Camera World reports very good daylight footage from the front camera and says plates on cars directly ahead were generally readable in its review. It describes night footage as low-noise, with passing plates just about visible when paused. Those are reviewer observations under their conditions, not a promise of readability in every scene, especially at distance or in difficult lighting. Read Digital Camera World’s review.
Who should buy the N5S?
It makes sense if you need cabin coverage
The defining benefit is seeing both front occupants and the rear cabin as well as the road behind and ahead. That can be valuable for rideshare, taxi, family, or fleet use where events inside the vehicle matter. Digital Camera World considers it compelling for regular rideshare use. If you will make use of both interior views, the extra channels have a clear purpose.
Look elsewhere if image detail comes first
Tom’s Guide positions the N5S as an option for maximum visibility when top image detail is less important. Its roundup notes the lack of a 4K/60fps mode, a bulky front unit, and tricky installation. If you only need to record your own driving, paying for and installing two cabin views may not be worthwhile. Read Tom’s Guide’s two-week review.
Digital Camera World names the Thinkware Q850 and 70mai T800 as alternatives. Its review describes the T800 as offering 4K front and rear cameras plus one cabin camera; the N5S’s distinction is its additional cabin view. Check current versions, specifications, and pricing before comparing. Tom’s Guide’s dash-cam roundup provides another comparison point.
Installation and parking mode
Before buying, check that the front unit will fit without obstructing your view, that its lenses can be aimed as needed, and that your rear-window layout allows a useful view. Installing two units and routing rear-camera wiring takes more planning than fitting a single camera. Consider the cable path and whether trim panels or an installer will be needed.

Vantrue advertises parking monitoring, but continuous power while the vehicle is parked requires an optional hardwire kit. TechRadar’s reviewer did not test parking features on the loan unit because it was not hardwired. Confirm that the kit is compatible with your vehicle and decide whether the installation and power arrangement suit your parking habits. Vantrue’s product listing shows bundle variants that may include a VP03 hardwire kit, but package contents differ.

Four video streams create many files, so storage capacity and card endurance matter. TechRadar’s review says a 512GB card may be useful, and some Vantrue bundles include a card. However, Vantrue’s current product listing advertises support up to 1TB while its technical comparison lists 512GB. Because those manufacturer sources conflict, check the manual for the exact regional model before choosing a card; do not assume 1TB compatibility from the product listing alone. Use a suitable high-endurance microSD card and verify its compatibility. Vantrue’s technical comparison and N5S manual page are the relevant references.

This is a dated retail snapshot, not a stable price or assurance of availability. TechRadar reported a $399.99 direct US price in October 2025; that earlier price should not be treated as current. Bundles may include different combinations of a hardwire kit, card, CPL filter, remote control, or 4G LTE module, so check the selected package rather than assuming accessories are included. A CPL filter is an optional glare-reduction accessory, not a requirement.
Verdict
The N5S is worth considering when four distinct views—including two cabin angles—solve a real recording need. Its low-light and daylight footage received positive reviewer assessments, but it is not the best match for shoppers whose main goal is maximum front-camera resolution or a simple installation. Decide based on whether interior coverage justifies the added hardware and setup, then verify card compatibility, bundle contents, and the power kit needed for parking use.
