On February 10, 2020, Vantage Data Centers announced plans to invest USD $2 billion in a European expansion built around its acquisition of Etix Everywhere and new campuses in Berlin, Milan, Warsaw, and Zurich. The announcement was a capital plan, not proof that the full amount was spent or that every proposed site opened. Later company announcements document an opening at Offenbach near Frankfurt and subsequent European investments, but do not establish the current operating status of all five sites in the original plan.

What did Vantage’s USD $2 billion plan cover?

Vantage said the investment would combine its acquisition of Etix Everywhere with greenfield data-center development in four cities. The company described the plan as an entry into five European markets, with Etix’s Frankfurt-area campus included alongside proposed campuses in Berlin, Milan, Warsaw, and Zurich. Vantage said more than USD $800 million of the intended investment would come from new equity capital, including investment from current investors and a new commitment from Digital Colony Partners. The release did not disclose the financial terms of the Etix transaction. Vantage’s February 10, 2020 announcement

Which campuses and capacities were announced?

Vantage listed the following planned capacities and site areas in 2020. The 255MW total is the arithmetic sum of those announced figures; it is not a current operating-capacity tally.

Market Capacity in the 2020 plan Announced site area
Berlin 64MW 13 acres (5 hectares)
Frankfurt area (Offenbach) 55MW 8 acres (3 hectares)
Milan 32MW 17 acres (7 hectares)
Warsaw 64MW 12 acres (5 hectares)
Zurich 40MW 7 acres (3 hectares)
Total across the five announced sites 255MW —

For Frankfurt, the planned campus was the 55MW project in Offenbach, near the city. Vantage described Etix as an EMEA data-center provider with more than 50MW of built capacity across its footprint and said the Offenbach campus was then under construction. Those company-reported figures describe the situation presented in 2020, not verified current status. Vantage’s February 10, 2020 announcement

What delivery milestone is documented at Offenbach?

On November 2, 2020, Vantage announced that its first 15MW data center at Offenbach had opened with partners Energieversorgung Offenbach and DataCenter-Group. The company described the campus at full development as three multi-story data centers totaling 55MW and 650,000 square feet. The opening verifies a first-facility milestone at the Frankfurt-area site; it does not establish that the entire 55MW campus was then operating, or that the other four locations in the original plan were completed. Vantage’s November 2, 2020 opening announcement

How should later European investment figures be read?

Later announcements describe distinct developments and should not be added to, or treated as proof of spending under, the original USD $2 billion plan.

  • European portfolio partnership, 2023: Vantage announced completion of an investment partnership with a consortium led by MEAG and Infranity, including DigitalBridge-affiliated funds. The company said the partnership initially included six stabilized European data centers, with 177MW of IT capacity across more than 1.8 million gross square feet, and a value of approximately €2.5 billion (approximately $2.7 billion). These are figures for that partnership and portfolio, not a revised value for the 2020 expansion. Vantage’s October 2023 announcement
  • United Kingdom, 2023: Vantage announced entry into London with a planned £500 million campus designed for 48MW, alongside an expansion at its Cardiff campus. It said its three UK campuses would total 216MW once fully developed. These were company-reported plans and full-development figures, not evidence that all capacity was already operating. Vantage’s January 2023 announcement
  • Italy, 2025: Vantage announced MXP2, its second Milan campus, as a more than €350 million investment with two buildings and 32MW of critical IT capacity. The company slated the first phase for spring 2026. It also forecast approximately €4 billion of Italian investment over eight years, about 4,000 construction workers, and around 250 permanent jobs; those are company estimates, not audited outcomes. Vantage said the Italian projects had been recognized by the Italian government as nationally strategic investments. Vantage’s October 2025 announcement
  • France, 2026: Altarea and Vantage announced a partnership to develop a proposed AI and cloud campus on Altarea-owned land near Bordeaux. Altarea said it had secured a 400MW power connection with the French utility. The release described the project as Vantage’s first entry into France; it remained a development proposal at announcement, rather than an operating campus. Altarea’s February 2026 announcement

What can—and cannot—be concluded about the expansion?

The public company announcements establish the scope Vantage proposed in 2020, the opening of the first 15MW facility at Offenbach that November, and several later European portfolio or development milestones. They do not provide current site-by-site operating status for all five locations in the original plan, nor do they demonstrate that Vantage spent the full USD $2 billion. Treat the 2020 capacities as planned figures and keep the later partnership, UK, Milan, and Bordeaux announcements distinct from that original capital commitment.
