On 2 October 2026, Vande Bharat train 26401/26404 crossed both the Chenab and Anji railway bridges at a reported 100 km/h. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the run marked a new record. The associated speed change applies to the 111 km broad-gauge Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra–Banihal section—not the entire Jammu–Srinagar route.
What happened on 2 October?
News On AIR reported that Vande Bharat train 26401/26404 crossed the Chenab Bridge and the Anji Bridge at 100 km/h. The report also said the maximum permissible speed on the 111 km broad-gauge section between Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra and Banihal had been raised to 100 km/h. News On AIR’s 2 October report attributes the announcement to Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw.

Vaishnaw described the crossing as a “new record” and called Chenab the world’s highest bridge and Anji India’s first cable-stayed railway bridge. Hindustan Times also characterized the crossing as a first in its 3 October report. Those are attributed claims: the available reports do not independently document every earlier crossing.
What does the 100 km/h speed apply to?
The reported maximum permissible speed is for the Katra–Banihal broad-gauge section. It should not be read as a speed guarantee for every bridge approach, curve, or segment, nor as the operating speed for the complete Jammu–Srinagar journey. A section-wide maximum is a limit, not a promise that a train will travel at that speed throughout.

How is the operating report different from Chenab Bridge’s design speed?
The Ministry of Railways’ 5 April 2021 release gave Chenab Bridge a design speed of 100 km/h and listed its construction cost as ₹1,486 crore at that time. The design figure is a bridge specification; it is separate from the 2026 report about the section’s permissible operating speed. The older release does not, by itself, establish the later operating authorization. See the Ministry of Railways release via PIB.

The reports support the account of a 100 km/h crossing and the announced section speed limit, but the underlying operating authorization document was not available in the cited material. They also do not provide a current passenger timetable, fares, or booking availability. The milestone report alone therefore cannot confirm when passengers can travel on a particular service or what it will cost.
