Valve says its SteamOS 0.4.3 beta improves Steam Frame power efficiency and battery life by up to 12% during both streamed and local gameplay. That is a claim in Valve’s October 1, 2026 release notes—not a guaranteed increase in play time: Valve says results vary with framerate and content, and does not state a test baseline or methodology.
What changes in SteamOS 0.4.3?
Valve’s October 1, 2026 announcement labels SteamOS 0.4.3 a beta-channel update for Steam Frame. Its headline battery change is improved power efficiency and battery lifetime in both streaming and local gameplay, with gains of up to 12%. Valve’s release note says: “Improved power efficiency and battery lifetime during both streaming and local gameplay, with gains of up to 12%. The percentage describes Valve’s reported efficiency and battery-lifetime gains; it is not a promise that every session will last 12% longer. The announcement gives no baseline runtime, test conditions, workload examples, or independent validation, so it is not possible to translate the figure into a specific number of extra minutes or hours.

Valve explicitly includes both use cases. Steam Frame is a standalone VR headset designed primarily for low-latency streaming of a player’s Steam library from a PC, and it also supports standalone VR and non-VR experiences, according to Valve’s Steam Frame documentation.

- Local gameplay: Valve says it applies to gameplay running locally on the headset as well.
Valve cautions that the result depends on framerate and content. It does not give separate percentages for streamed and local play or specify which games or settings produce the largest change.
How to opt into the SteamOS 0.4.3 beta
Valve says users can select the beta on Steam Frame through Settings > System > System Update Channel. The release notes describe the features as still being tested; choosing the beta therefore means using software that may change as Valve continues testing.

Other Steam Frame changes in the update
The same release notes list further VR streaming reliability improvements, including fixes for Error 17 connection issues. Valve says reducing those issues also requires SteamVR 2.18.2 or later on the PC. At the time of the October 1 announcement, that SteamVR version was on the beta branch; branch availability can change.
