Valve open-sourced ToGL in March 2014 as a developer tool for porting games that used Direct3D 9 to OpenGL platforms, including Linux, SteamOS, and macOS. It was a limited, engine-integrated translation layer—not a consumer app that could make Windows games run on Linux with a click.
What is Valve’s ToGL?
ToGL is a Direct3D-to-OpenGL translation layer that Valve took from the Dota 2 source tree and released as open-source code. Its intended role was inside a game engine’s rendering path: translate supported Direct3D calls and shader bytecode into OpenGL equivalents so developers could adapt a Direct3D-based game for other platforms. Valve’s ToGL README describes it as a limited Direct3D 9.0c implementation and says the code was taken directly from Dota 2.
What DirectX features does ToGL support?
Valve documents a limited subset of Direct3D 9.0c, bytecode-level HLSL-to-GLSL translation, and partial Shader Model 3 support. The README specifically lists multiple render targets as supported and vertex texture fetch as unsupported. It does not establish support for later Direct3D generations, so ToGL should not be treated as a general DirectX compatibility layer.

Potentially, by reducing some of the work needed to adapt a Direct3D-oriented renderer for OpenGL. A contemporaneous report on March 12, 2014, described the release as a way to help port DirectX-based games to Linux, SteamOS, and Mac OS X, with Direct3D calls translated into OpenGL equivalents (report dated March 12, 2014).

That could make some ports more feasible, but it could not complete a port by itself. Developers still needed to test and adapt the game for the target platform, including graphics drivers and other platform-specific systems such as input and audio. ToGL addressed a part of rendering—not every requirement for shipping a working game.
Can you use ToGL to run Windows games on Linux?
No. ToGL was made for developers to integrate into a game or engine, not for players to install as a runtime compatibility application. Its narrow Direct3D 9-era coverage and Source Engine-specific behavior also make it unsuitable as a universal solution for Windows games.

Is ToGL a replacement for Proton or DXVK?
No. The available documentation identifies ToGL as an older, engine-integrated Direct3D 9-to-OpenGL porting layer; it does not establish it as a replacement for Proton or DXVK. Those names refer to approaches readers may encounter in modern Windows-game compatibility discussions, but the ToGL documentation does not provide a like-for-like comparison of their API coverage, backends, performance, or maintenance.
What are ToGL’s limitations and support status?
Valve warns that ToGL “most likely won’t build by itself” and is provided “as-is and completely unsupported.” The README also cautions that parts of the code are hardcoded to match Source Engine behavior (ValveSoftware ToGL README). Developers considering the code would need to assess those assumptions against their own engine and handle integration and maintenance themselves.

How does ToGL fit Valve’s current Linux graphics guidance?
Valve’s current Steamworks Linux/SteamOS documentation says Vulkan is the preferred library for high-performance graphics. It also notes that older games may use translation methods to convert legacy rendering code into OpenGL calls, citing older Valve Source games as examples (Steamworks Linux documentation). That places ToGL in the history of Valve’s Linux graphics work rather than presenting it as the recommended route for a new high-performance renderer.
Valve’s Steamworks SDK documentation also lists “glmgr” as the “ToGL” DirectX-to-OpenGL compatibility layer for macOS (Steamworks SDK documentation).
