Valve launched Steam Game Recording as a beta on June 26, 2024—not as a new 2026 feature. It is Steam’s built-in system for recording gameplay, finding moments on a timeline, creating clips and exporting them as MP4 files. The capture applies to games played through the Steam Client, rather than your entire desktop.
What Steam Game Recording does
Valve described Steam Game Recording in its June 26, 2024 Steam News announcement as a built-in system for creating and sharing gameplay footage that works with games on Steam. The feature is integrated into Steam’s in-game overlay and desktop client, so you do not need separate recording software or capture hardware for the basic workflow.
Steam stores the recording locally. You can review it, mark a segment as a clip, and export that clip as an MP4 file. The raw recording and the exported clip are separate: creating a clip identifies the section you want, while exporting produces the MP4.

| Mode | How it works | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Record in background | Steam continuously captures gameplay into a rolling recording space. When the configured space is full, older footage is overwritten. | Saving an unexpected play, bug or match moment that you did not start recording in advance. |
| Record on demand | Steam records only after you turn recording on. | Planned sessions or situations where you want recording active only for selected sections. |
Steam lets you configure the maximum disk space, save location, captured audio and shortcut keys in Steam Settings or through the in-game overlay. Background mode needs enough allocated space to retain the period you care about; increasing the allocation gives the rolling buffer more room but uses more local storage.

- 1280 x 800 HDR OLED display with premium anti-glare etched glass, 7.4" Diagonal display size up to 90Hz refresh rate
- Wi-Fi 6E
- 50Whr battery; 3-12 hours of gameplay (content-dependent)
- Carrying case with removable liner
How to record gameplay on Steam
- Open Steam’s recording controls. Use Steam Settings or the in-game overlay to open the Game Recording options.
- Select a mode. Choose Record in background for a rolling buffer or Record on demand for manual recording.
- Set storage and audio options. Choose the maximum disk allocation, save location and whether Steam should capture audio from the game and other programs.
- Set shortcuts. Assign keys for starting or stopping recording and for saving moments, using the shortcut controls shown by Steam.
- Play through Steam. Recording captures games played through the Steam Client when the feature is enabled.
The capture is gameplay video, not a general desktop recorder. Steam does not capture your desktop or video from other programs. You can, however, choose to include audio from another program, such as voice chat.
Review recordings and export an MP4 clip
- Open the in-game overlay while playing, or open Steam’s desktop-client Recordings & Screenshots viewer.
- Review the recording and its timeline to locate the section you want.
- Create a clip covering that section.
- Export the clip. Steam produces an MP4 file that you can keep or share outside Steam.
On Steam Deck, recordings are available from the Media tab in the Steam menu. The same distinction applies there: a recording is the captured material, while exporting a clip creates the MP4 file.
Timeline markers depend on the game
A recording timeline is available for Steam captures, but detailed, game-specific markers are optional. A game must implement Steam Timeline support for events such as kills, rounds, objectives or other notable states to appear as markers.

Steam’s beta-era support FAQ listed Dota 2, Counter-Strike 2 and Left 4 Dead 2 as examples of games with implementations at that time. That launch-era list should not be treated as a complete or current catalog.
When markers are present, hovering over one reveals its details, and selecting it can suggest a clip. Players can also add their own markers. Valve’s Dota 2 announcement described background or hotkey recording, game-defined markers, player-added markers and tools for reviewing and clipping moments.
What game developers can integrate
Valve’s 2025 Steamworks presentation shows Steam Game Recording as an optional developer integration. A game can help adjust recording length and quality and add markers for game state or notable events. Valve also presents clipping as useful for sharing moments and for submitting bug reports.

Without that integration, Steam can still record gameplay, but the game cannot provide those specialized timeline events. Recording support and timeline-marker support are therefore separate capabilities.

Storage, audio and practical limits
- Storage is local: Steam uses the allocation and save location you configure.
- Background footage is temporary: once the rolling space fills, older background video is overwritten.
- Audio is configurable: you can choose captured audio, including audio from other programs such as voice chat.
- Scope is limited to gameplay: Steam does not record desktop or unrelated program video.
- No universal performance or hardware figure is established here: Valve’s cited launch, support and developer materials do not publish a Steam Game Recording-specific performance percentage, minimum drive requirement or hardware benchmark.
If you need to retain long sessions or many clips, additional internal storage is an optional capacity upgrade, not a stated Steam requirement. Valve does not specify a particular SSD, capacity or performance tier for this feature.
Is Steam Game Recording a 2026 launch?
No. The beta announcement date is June 26, 2024. Steam’s support material documents how the feature works, but the cited materials do not establish a precise release-channel status or a complete current operating-system and Steam-client version matrix as of September 27, 2026. Treat availability and controls as client-dependent and check the current Steam client documentation if a particular platform or version matters.

- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
How it compares with separate recording tools
For a fair comparison, evaluate the workflow rather than assuming one tool is universally better. The useful questions are:
- Does it record only supported games or the whole desktop?
- Can it maintain a rolling background buffer, or does it require a hotkey before the moment happens?
- How are clips created and exported, and is MP4 output available?
- Can games add event-aware timeline markers?
- Can you control storage allocation, save location, audio sources and shortcuts?
Steam Game Recording’s distinctive advantage is that these controls, review tools and optional game timeline integration sit inside Steam. The available Valve materials do not provide a benchmark against competing recorders, so performance and quality comparisons require separate, product-specific testing.

Does Steam Game Recording record in the background?
Yes. Select Record in background to use a rolling recording space; older footage is overwritten when that space fills. Record on demand records only while you enable it.
Can Steam Game Recording capture my desktop?
No. Steam’s feature captures gameplay from games played through the Steam Client, not desktop or other-program video. You may optionally include audio from another program, such as voice chat.
How do I save a Steam recording as an MP4?
Open the recording in the in-game overlay or Steam’s Recordings & Screenshots viewer, create a clip, then export that clip. Exporting produces the MP4 file.
