Choose VA mental health care as the more direct starting point for clinical treatment that may include therapy, medication, or peer support. Consider a Vet Center for community-based readjustment counseling, outreach, and referrals related to military-to-civilian adjustment, trauma, grief, or family concerns—if you meet its separate eligibility rules. You may use both: VA policy describes referrals and coordination among Vet Centers, VA medical facilities, and community providers.
You do not need to be enrolled in VA health care just to contact a Vet Center. If you are unsure which route fits, start by telling a local VA medical center or Vet Center what kind of help you want.
How VA mental health care and Vet Centers differ
These are related but distinct services. VA mental health care is the broader clinical-care route; available support can include counseling, therapy, medication, peer support, or combinations of services. Vet Centers focus on readjustment counseling, outreach, and referrals. Their counseling may be individual, group, or family-based.

What Vet Center readjustment counseling includes
Readjustment counseling is psychosocial support for military-related concerns. The Veterans Health Administration states that direct readjustment counseling is available in individual, group, and family modalities. Vet Centers also provide outreach and connect people with other services when appropriate.
#1 Best Overall
- Individual and group counseling, plus family counseling for military-related issues.
- Bereavement counseling for families affected by an active-duty death.
- Military sexual trauma counseling and referral.
- Substance-use assessment and referral, and employment assessment and referral.
- Explanation of and referral for VA benefits.
- Screening and referral for medical concerns, including traumatic brain injury and depression.
- Outreach and education, including referrals to VA facilities and community providers.
VA says family members of combat Veterans and service members have been eligible for readjustment counseling related to military issues since 1979. Family participation and services depend on the relevant circumstances and goals.
Who may be eligible for a Vet Center
Vet Center access has its own criteria; combat-zone service is one possible route, not the only one. VA lists eligibility pathways that include:
- Active-duty service in a combat theater or area of hostility.
- Military sexual trauma, regardless of service era.
- Specified mortuary services or direct emergent medical care for war casualties.
- Qualifying support as an unmanned aerial vehicle crew member.
- Certain national-emergency or disaster-response service.
- Certain Coast Guard drug-interdiction operations.
- Certain drilling Reserve members with service-related behavioral-health conditions or psychological trauma.
- Some education-benefit cases in which a service-related readjustment need hinders adjustment.
Family members may participate when it supports the eligible person’s goals, and certain bereavement services are available to families. The criteria are detailed, so a short description of your service cannot establish eligibility. Contact a Vet Center to discuss your circumstances. VA says staff will work to identify community resources if you do not qualify. Check the VA’s Vet Center eligibility information.

- If you already receive VA medical services: Ask your primary-care provider to help arrange a mental-health appointment.
- If you are not using VA medical services: Contact a nearby VA medical center or Vet Center and explain what kind of support you are seeking. Enrollment in VA health care is not required simply to contact a Vet Center.
- If you need help finding resources: Call VA’s general mental-health line at 877-222-8387, or use the VA mental-health local-care tools to find a medical center, Vet Center, or other resource.
- If eligibility or appointments are unclear: Confirm both with the Vet Center serving your area. Local availability and procedures can vary.
