USS Connecticut (SSN-22) is now expected to complete its repair availability in summer 2027, according to a Navy official quoted by The War Zone on September 28, 2026. That is a revised completion target—not a confirmed date for the submarine to return to operational tasking.
What happened to USS Connecticut?
The Seawolf-class nuclear-powered attack submarine struck an underwater seamount in the South China Sea in October 2021. The collision caused severe damage, particularly to its bow. It first reached Guam, then San Diego, before moving to the Puget Sound area for repair, according to The War Zone.
Repairs are taking place at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard & Intermediate Maintenance Facility. A Navy official described the work to The War Zone as “structural and systems restoration and required lifecycle maintenance” during a complex Extended Docking Selected Restricted Availability, or EDSRA.

The completion target has shifted several times since the availability began. The dates below are successive projections reported by The War Zone, not dates when Connecticut returned to service.

The latest target was reported by The War Zone, which also recounted the earlier milestones, including the 2023 update attributed to Naval News.
Why has the repair been delayed?
The latest report does not establish the specific cause of each schedule change. The War Zone notes the challenge of major repairs to a class that is no longer in production and consists of only three submarines, but that context does not prove what caused any particular delay. The report also does not establish Connecticut’s total repair cost.

Broader fleet maintenance pressures provide context, not a Connecticut-specific explanation. The Government Accountability Office’s 2026 report projected that, without mitigation, 15 attack submarines could accumulate more than 14,000 inactive idle days and $3.1 billion in operating and support costs during fiscal years 2026 through 2030. Those projections cover the wider attack-submarine force; they are not figures for Connecticut’s repair.

When will Connecticut return to service?
Summer 2027 is the Navy’s reported target for completing the EDSRA. The reporting does not provide a separate date for Connecticut to resume operational tasking, so completion should not be treated as a guaranteed deployment or return-to-duty date.

What is the submarine’s longer-term outlook?
The War Zone reports that the Navy’s current plan is to inactivate Connecticut in 2031. That is a planning date and could change; it is not a guaranteed retirement date. The boat is one of just three Seawolf-class submarines.
