To use a compatible SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD with an iPhone, connect it directly, then open Files > Browse and select the drive under Locations. For SanDisk’s listed iPhone workflow, the drive must be formatted as exFAT; password-protected drives and phone connection adapters are unsupported. Check SanDisk’s current compatibility table for your exact drive and iPhone models before connecting.

Check compatibility before connecting

SanDisk lists supported Extreme Portable SSD model numbers for iPhone 15, 16, and 17 series in its iPhone compatibility and connection guidance. Compatibility depends on the specific drive revision and iPhone, so do not assume every Extreme Portable SSD works with every iPhone. Match the model number printed on your drive to the current table.

Apple says iPhone 15 and later models use USB-C and can connect to external storage. That general capability does not replace SanDisk’s model-specific compatibility information for this drive.

Prepare the SSD

  • Use exFAT: SanDisk specifies exFAT for its supported iPhone setup. Apple documents support for additional file systems with external storage, but follow SanDisk’s narrower guidance for this product workflow.
  • Disable password protection: SanDisk says password-protected drives are not supported in this workflow.
  • Connect directly: SanDisk says phone connection adapters are unsupported. Use a compatible cable or connector to connect the drive directly rather than treating an adapter as the default solution.

Changing a drive’s format can erase its contents. If it is not already exFAT, copy files you need elsewhere before reformatting, and use a method appropriate for the exact drive and computer you have.

Sandisk 2TB Extreme Portable SSD, Up to 1050MB/s, USB-C, USB 3.2 Gen 2, IP65 Water and Dust Resistance, Updated Firmware, External Solid State Drive, SDSSDE61-2T00-G25
  • Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
  • Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
  • Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
  • Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
  • Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C

Connect the drive and find it in Files

  1. Confirm that your iPhone and SSD model are listed as compatible, and that the drive is exFAT and not password-protected.
  2. Connect the SSD directly to the iPhone with a compatible cable or connector.
  3. Open Files, tap Browse, and look under Locations for the external drive.
  4. If Locations is not visible, tap Browse again. Tap the drive’s name to open its files.

Apple’s iPhone User Guide explains that Files and other supported apps can access files on connected external devices. SanDisk describes using Files to select, copy, move, and organize content between an iPhone and a listed drive.

Copy or move files intentionally

Connecting the SSD makes its files available in Files; it does not automatically back up every photo or other item on the iPhone. In Files, select the content you want and use the available copy or move controls to put it on the drive. To retrieve files later, connect the SSD and browse its contents in Files.

Understand the cable and speed limits

The SSD’s advertised maximum is not a promise of the speed you will get with an iPhone. SanDisk’s 2024 product sheet rates the drive at up to 1,000 MB/s read and 950 MB/s write, based on SanDisk internal testing. SanDisk says performance can be lower depending on the host device, interface, usage conditions, and other factors; those figures are not an independent iPhone test. See the SanDisk product sheet.

Apple says faster USB 3 transfers require a USB 3-capable cable and are available on listed Pro models. The USB-C cable included with iPhone supports charging and USB 2 speeds, according to Apple’s external storage guidance. A USB 3 cable is relevant only if your iPhone supports the faster mode and you need it; it is not required for basic access in Files.

If the SSD does not appear in Locations

  1. Check the connection: Disconnect and reconnect the drive, ensuring the cable or connector is seated. Keep the connection direct, as SanDisk does not support phone connection adapters for this workflow.
  2. Recheck compatibility: Compare the exact SSD model number and iPhone model against SanDisk’s current table.
  3. Verify format and security: SanDisk specifies exFAT and does not support password-protected drives for this setup.
  4. Check power if needed: Apple notes that some external hard drives may need more power than the iPhone supplies. If the drive is not receiving enough power and your iPhone has USB-C, Apple says a powered USB hub can be used. This is conditional troubleshooting, not a requirement for every portable SSD.
  5. Return to Files: Tap Browse and check Locations again after resolving the connection, format, security, or power issue.

What the product specifications do—and do not—tell you

SanDisk’s 2024 product sheet lists USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10 Gbps), 1 TB and 2 TB capacities, and a five-year limited warranty for the product covered by that sheet. The sheet cautions that usable capacity is lower than the nominal amount and specifications may change. These are sheet-level details, not a guarantee for every retail SKU; check the exact product listing and current warranty terms for your drive.
