A used CPU can be electrically sound and still be part of a computer that a game service restricts. For Riot games, Riot documents hardware-ID restrictions at the device level; its public guidance does not establish that a CPU alone always triggers a ban or provide buyers with a pre-sale ban-status check. You can reduce compatibility, condition and transaction risks, but ordinary boot and benchmark tests cannot certify game access.
What a hardware restriction means for a used CPU
“Hardware banned CPU” is a common buyer concern, but it is not a precise technical diagnosis. Riot’s guidance describes restrictions on physical components and device access. It also warns that using another account on a restricted computer can have consequences for that account. The distinction that matters is between whether the processor functions and whether a particular game service permits the computer to access it. A successful boot or stability test only speaks to hardware operation. It does not reveal the service’s restriction status.

The official sources reviewed here provide no public pre-purchase lookup that tells a buyer whether a used CPU or computer is subject to a game restriction. AMD and Intel serial-number resources help identify products or direct customers to support; they are not described as game-ban checks. This is a limit of the public sources cited here, not proof that no publisher or seller has a private check. There is no substantiated prevalence figure for used CPUs carrying a game-related restriction, so a buyer should not assume either that the risk is common or that it is zero.
How to reduce ordinary used-CPU buying risks
- Confirm the exact processor. Ask for a clear photo showing the model markings and, where relevant, serial or batch details. Compare them with the listing and retain the information. If details do not match or the seller avoids reasonable questions, pause the purchase. Identifiers establish product identity, not ban status.
- Check motherboard and BIOS compatibility. Find the motherboard maker’s CPU support list and verify that the exact model is supported with the BIOS version installed or available to you. AMD’s buyer guidance points to current compatibility and BIOS information. AMD support and warranty information
- Inspect the part and seller evidence. Review clear, current photos of the processor’s contacts or pins, substrate and markings for visible damage. - Agree on testing and returns before paying. Get the return period and permitted test conditions in writing. For an in-person purchase, ask to confirm that the CPU boots in a compatible system. For a remote order, document the condition when it arrives and follow the seller’s stated process for opening and testing. A stability test can expose faults under load, but it cannot establish whether a game service will accept the computer.
- Compare the whole transaction. Weigh the exact model and performance, motherboard and BIOS compatibility, visible condition, seller reputation, available evidence, test access, return period, total cost and applicable warranty terms. Riot says reinstalling VALORANT or Vanguard, changing the connection and restarting do not remove this restriction. Do not test a suspected restricted computer by logging unrelated accounts into it: Riot warns those accounts can also face consequences. The affected account holder can submit a support request for reevaluation; Riot investigates and decides whether to lift or extend the restriction. Riot’s current VALORANT error reference says an HWID ban typically lasts four months. This is Riot’s typical duration for that restriction, not a guarantee for every case and not a duration that should be applied to other sanctions, games or anti-cheat providers. Riot VALORANT Vanguard error codes

What a test can—and cannot—tell you
- Boot and load testing: can help show whether the CPU works in a compatible system and whether faults appear under use.
- Inspection and identifiers: can help establish the part’s visible condition and identity.
- Return terms: can give you recourse if the delivered part is damaged, incompatible or faulty, subject to the seller’s terms.
- None of these checks: establishes that a game publisher will permit the device to connect. Riot’s guidance describes the restriction but offers no public buyer-facing clearance lookup.
Keep the purchase decision grounded in what you can verify: compatibility, condition, seller reliability and a workable return or test arrangement. Treat game-access uncertainty separately rather than interpreting a functional CPU as proof of unrestricted access.
