Claude in Chrome can read pages and interact with websites, while WebMCP is a separate, experimental way for websites to expose structured actions to AI agents. You can use Claude’s extension on ordinary pages; WebMCP matters only when a site provides compatible tools. Both can affect real accounts and transactions, so review consequential actions before they happen.
What Claude in Chrome can do
Anthropic describes Claude in Chrome as a browser extension that lets Claude “read, click, and navigate websites alongside you.” It can read the current tab, follow links, type, and fill website forms. These are browser interaction capabilities; they do not depend on a website supporting WebMCP. See Anthropic’s Get started with Claude in Chrome for its current product details.
The extension is for Google Chrome. Anthropic says it is not supported on other Chromium-based browsers or mobile devices. Its August 26, 2026 help article lists Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise as eligible paid plans. Availability and features can change: the article describes side-panel behavior as beta, says Cowork behavior is available on Max and Team and rolling out to Pro, and notes that Enterprise use depends on administrator settings.
How to set up Claude in Chrome
- Open Google Chrome and find Claude in Chrome in the Chrome Web Store.
- Add the extension, then sign in to your Claude account.
- Review and grant the browser permissions it requests. Those permissions allow the extension to access and interact with websites.
- Open a page and use Claude in Chrome to ask for a task. Review the page and the actions Claude proposes or takes, especially before a consequential step.
For the desktop connector workflow, Anthropic’s documented path is to open Claude Desktop, go to Settings > Connectors, enable Claude in Chrome, install the extension, and enable it for the conversation. Some features require the Claude Desktop app to remain open and connected; follow the current setup guidance in Anthropic’s help page.

What WebMCP is—and what it is not
WebMCP is a proposed web standard for websites to expose structured tools that AI agents can discover and call. Chrome for Developers describes it as a way to “build and expose structured tools for AI agents.” It is a site-side capability, not another name for Claude in Chrome and not a feature that every website automatically has. Read Chrome’s WebMCP overview for the developer-facing explanation.
A website can expose tools through an imperative JavaScript API or declarative annotations on HTML forms. A compatible agent can use the tools a site makes available, but it must visit the site to discover them. Sites with complex application state may need additional JavaScript or changes to how that state is handled before their actions work well as tools.

Is WebMCP available in Chrome?
Chrome’s developer documentation describes experimental access, not a stable feature enabled for all users and sites. Developers can join the origin trial documented from Chrome 149, or enable the local development flag chrome://flags/#enable-webmcp-testing and relaunch Chrome. These are experimental routes for trying or building with WebMCP, not evidence that a given public website exposes usable tools.
In practice, WebMCP use depends on several pieces lining up: a browser environment with the relevant experimental support, a site that registers tools, and an agent that can discover and use them. Claude in Chrome’s ordinary ability to read and interact with pages is a separate capability; the available documentation does not establish that every extension workflow invokes WebMCP.

Direct page interaction versus WebMCP tools
| Approach | How it works | Requirements and limits |
|---|---|---|
| Claude in Chrome page interaction | Claude reads the page and interacts with visible website controls such as links and forms. | Requires the supported Google Chrome extension and eligible Claude access. The site need not expose WebMCP tools. |
| WebMCP | A website explicitly exposes structured actions for an agent to discover and invoke. | Requires site-provided tools and experimental Chrome support as documented by Chrome. Complex application state may require extra implementation work. |
Explicit tools can give an agent a clearer description of an action than it gets by interpreting page controls. That does not make the action inherently safe or guarantee success: the site still determines what the tool does, and Chrome notes limitations for complex interfaces and headless use.

Browser agents process page content that may be untrusted, and their actions can have real effects. Anthropic tells Claude in Chrome users to review its safety guidance. Its separate API browser-use documentation—not a complete specification of the Chrome extension—also warns that page content can try to manipulate an agent and recommends isolation, URL restrictions, and human confirmation for consequential tasks. See Anthropic’s browser use tool documentation.

Chrome’s WebMCP security guidance recommends limiting which tools a site exposes, being especially careful with cross-origin access to user data, and marking outputs that include user-generated or externally sourced text as untrusted. For actions with significant effects, such as booking travel or transferring money, Chrome advises setting consequentialHint: true so the agent or browser can request confirmation. These are developer-facing safeguards, but they describe risks users should keep in mind too. See Chrome’s WebMCP tool security guidance.

Quick Recap
- Check the destination, details, and final amount before a purchase or booking.
- Pause before sending messages, changing account settings, accepting terms, or transferring money.
- Do not treat instructions found on a website as trustworthy merely because the agent read them.
- Keep a human in control of approvals; an agent’s ability to click or invoke a tool is not proof that the result is correct.
