ChatGPT can help with research, document triage, spreadsheet analysis, planning and recurring work—not just drafting text. I think of it as a virtual assistant worth about $100 a month in usefulness, not as a $100 subscription: OpenAI lists ChatGPT Plus at $20 per month, and that price does not include separately billed API usage.
What “$100-a-month virtual assistant” means—and what it doesn’t
The $100 figure is a personal value benchmark, not ChatGPT’s price or a claim that it replaces a paid human assistant. To make that valuation credible for your own work, track which tasks you delegate, how much time they take with and without ChatGPT, and what review or correction each requires. Without those records, treat $100 as a shorthand for perceived usefulness rather than measured savings.
OpenAI’s Help Center lists ChatGPT Plus at $20 per month; its usage limits can vary, and API use is billed separately. Some capabilities are available on Free with limits, so a paid plan is not automatically necessary for every workflow. Check the current Plus plan details and pricing page before deciding.
Why the assistant framing fits more than writing
OpenAI’s 2025 Economic Research study estimates that ChatGPT messages overall were about 49% Asking, 40% Doing and 11% Expressing. For work-related messages, about 56% were Doing as of July 2025, and nearly three-quarters of those Doing messages were writing tasks. In other words, writing is a large part of work use, but not the whole story.

The same study associates about 81% of work-related messages with obtaining, documenting or interpreting information, or with decisions, advice, problem-solving and creative thinking. OpenAI summarizes its findings this way: “Overall, we find that information-seeking and decision support are the most common ChatGPT use cases in most jobs.” Those are patterns across messages, not proof of any individual’s time savings, accuracy or replacement of a human assistant. Use it to turn research into a decision brief
For a question that depends on recent information, ask ChatGPT to search and organize what it finds. Deep Research is designed for multi-step research and can produce cited outputs where available. Treat the result as a starting brief: open the cited sources, check dates and original wording, and distinguish what a source says from the model’s synthesis.

- Set the decision: Tell it what you need to decide, who the brief is for and what constraints matter.
- Define the evidence: Ask for recent, source-backed information and specify the source types or date range that would be useful.
- Request a useful format: For example, ask for a short comparison table followed by open questions and a recommendation with reasons.
- Verify before acting: Visit the cited sources and confirm critical facts, especially dates, eligibility rules and numbers.
A reusable prompt could be: Prepare a brief to help me decide [decision]. Find recent, reliable sources on [topic]. Separate confirmed facts from interpretation, include citations, compare the main options against [criteria], and list uncertainties I should resolve. Replace the bracketed details for each task; a citation is a route to evidence, not a guarantee that the summary is correct.

Let it triage files, meeting material and documents
ChatGPT can work with supported file and audio uploads to summarize content, extract details, answer questions or transcribe audio. That makes it useful for turning a long document into a short action list, locating specific terms in a file, or converting meeting notes into owners and deadlines.

- Upload the relevant supported file or audio in ChatGPT.
- Ask for a clearly bounded output, such as “List each deadline, the responsible person and the source passage.”
- Ask it to flag anything missing or ambiguous instead of filling gaps with assumptions.
- Check extracted names, dates, figures and commitments against the original before sharing or acting.
File handling is not a reason to upload sensitive material without considering your organization’s rules and the service’s data controls. Remove information that is not needed, and use only files you are permitted to share.
Use data analysis to inspect a spreadsheet
For a supported spreadsheet, describe the columns and the question you want answered. ChatGPT’s data-analysis capabilities can help summarize trends, clean data or create projections, but the result is only as dependable as the input and assumptions.

- Upload the file and identify the relevant sheet, date range, units and any known data-quality issues.
- Ask for a specific output: for example, a monthly trend summary, missing-value check or projection with its assumptions stated.
- Request the method or calculations behind important results so you can inspect them.
- Compare key totals and a sample of records with the source spreadsheet before using the findings.
Do not treat a projection as a fact about the future. Check whether the data covers the period and variables needed for the question, and make the assumptions visible to anyone relying on the result.
Make recurring work easier with a Project
Projects keep related chats, files and instructions together, which can reduce the need to restate context for an ongoing task. For example, a Project might hold background documents and instructions for a weekly research brief or a recurring content-planning task. Project availability depends on plan and workspace settings. - Create a Project for a recurring workstream, rather than mixing unrelated tasks into one conversation.
- Add the reference files and instructions that should apply to that work.
- Start a fresh chat within the Project for each new run, and give it the current inputs and deadline.
- Review each output against the current source material; saved context does not ensure that older information is still accurate.
Capture ideas with voice and schedule reminders where available
Voice conversations can support hands-free conversation and spoken responses on supported platforms. That can be handy for capturing an idea while away from a keyboard or talking through a plan. Review the transcript or resulting notes before treating them as final, particularly for names, figures and instructions.
Scheduled tasks can run one-time or recurring prompts for some users, subject to availability. If the feature is available in your account, it can help with a reminder or a recurring prompt; do not assume it will complete work in another app or take external action unless that ability is explicitly supported. Decide whether it fits your assistant work
ChatGPT is most useful when a task has a clear input, a bounded output and a human who can review the result. Before routing work through it, consider these practical trade-offs:

- Recurring tasks: Projects can keep relevant chats, files and instructions together; you still need to supply current information and review the output.
- Current facts: Search and Deep Research can help gather sources, but you should check the sources and dates yourself.
- Files and data: Uploads and analysis can speed triage, but sensitive-data rules and verification remain your responsibility.
- Reliability and accountability: ChatGPT can draft, organize and analyze; it does not take responsibility for a consequential decision or guarantee correctness.
- External action: If work requires judgment, accountability or action in another system, determine whether ChatGPT can actually perform that action; otherwise, a person must do it.
- Cost and access: Compare the plan’s current price and limits with your usage, and include any separate API costs. Free access may cover some needs, sometimes with limited availability.
OpenAI documents a broad set of capabilities, including question answering, translation, search, file and audio uploads, data analysis, voice, Projects, scheduled tasks and custom GPTs. Which tools appear depends on plan, settings and availability; consult the capabilities overview and current plan details for your account.
