For a payment or transfer, choose the stablecoin and blockchain network the recipient can actually receive—not simply the token with the more familiar name. Confirm the recipient’s exact network and address, check the live fees and confirmation rules for your route, and consider how each issuer’s disclosures and redemption terms fit your needs. Neither USDT nor USDC is guaranteed to trade at exactly $1 at every moment, and the available evidence does not establish a universal winner for cost, speed, or suitability.
Start with the recipient’s token and network
Before you send, ask the recipient or receiving service to confirm the exact token and blockchain network it supports. “USDT” or “USDC” alone is not a complete transfer instruction: the same token can exist on multiple networks, and tokens on different networks are not automatically interchangeable.
Tether warns that senders need to select the correct transport protocol as well as verify the destination address. Circle lists 38 native USDC networks on its USDC page as of September 16, 2026. That breadth does not mean a particular exchange, wallet, or merchant supports every listed network. Check the receiving provider’s current deposit instructions and support list for the specific route you intend to use.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Get the recipient’s exact token and network from their current deposit or payment instructions.
- Check that your sending wallet or provider supports that same token on that same network.
- Compare the displayed address and any network-specific details against the recipient’s instructions before confirming.
- Review the final transfer screen for the selected token, network, amount, fee, and destination.
Sending a small test amount can be an additional precaution, but it may incur another fee and does not replace checking the network and address.

Compare the practical route, not an assumed fee or speed winner
A transfer’s total cost and arrival time depend on the route: the blockchain fee, any exchange or payment-provider charge, network congestion, and the recipient’s confirmation policy can all matter. The issuer pages reviewed here do not establish a current, matched USDT-versus-USDC fee or timing comparison. Check the live quote and terms in the services you will use rather than assuming one token is always cheaper or faster.
Know how you would turn the token into dollars
Holding a stablecoin in a wallet is different from redeeming it directly with its issuer. A retail holder’s practical way to obtain dollars may be through an exchange, wallet, or payment provider; that service’s eligibility, fees, withdrawal methods, and processing rules apply.

USDT redemption
Tether’s legal terms make direct issuance and redemption conditional. They require verified-customer status and allow minimum amounts, other requirements, and fees. Redemption proceeds are paid to a bank account in the verified customer’s name. Tether’s terms also say that redemption under those terms ceased for USD₮ on Omni, Bitcoin Cash SLP, Kusama, EOS, and Algorand effective September 1, 2025. Confirm current support and eligibility before relying on direct redemption.
USDC redemption
Circle describes USDC as redeemable 1:1 for US dollars, but Circle Mint bank transfers are for institutions, not individuals. An individual should not assume that holding USDC creates direct access to Circle Mint; the available route and its requirements depend on the exchange or service used.

Compare reserve disclosures with their limits
Circle says USDC reserves are held separately from Circle’s operating funds for holders’ benefit. Its transparency page says reserve holdings and associated mint/burn flows are disclosed weekly, and that a Big Four accounting firm provides monthly third-party assurance under AICPA attestation standards. The page displayed a reserve snapshot dated October 5, 2026; that dated snapshot is not a permanent figure.
Tether says circulation information is typically updated daily and reserve information typically published quarterly, while stating that it does not guarantee a particular update schedule. Its legal terms say USD₮ reserves may include cash, cash equivalents, and other assets, including loan receivables and assets from affiliates. These descriptions are issuer statements with different reporting cadences and categories; neither establishes that a holder can always redeem immediately.

For historical context, the IMF’s December 2025 paper estimated, based on cited issuer reports, that in June 2025 USDC reserves included 40% short-term U.S. Treasury bills, 45% overnight reverse repos collateralized with Treasuries, and deposits in financial institutions. It estimated that Tether held nearly 75% of reserves in short-term U.S. Treasuries, including through reverse repos, and about 5% each in bitcoin and gold. Those are dated IMF estimates, not live reserve snapshots or guarantees about future composition.

A dollar peg is an intended value, not a promise that the market price will equal one dollar at every instant. The IMF’s December 2025 paper reports that about 99% of intraday stablecoin deviations from target were within 1%, with significant exceptions. It describes USDC trading 12% below parity after Silicon Valley Bank failed in March 2023 and USDT also moving below parity after the TerraUSD collapse in May 2022; each deviation lasted about two days. These are historical episodes, not forecasts of future prices.

Tether’s terms state that its tokens are not legal tender and are not backed by a government or protected through insurance provided by Tether or its affiliates. Do not treat either token as risk-free, insured, or immune to market, issuer, provider, or network risks.
Which should you choose for a payment?
For a particular payment, the recipient’s supported token and network are usually the first deciding factors. If both tokens and networks are accepted, choose based on the live route’s total fee and timing, how you can exit to dollars if needed, and which issuer’s disclosure and redemption terms you are comfortable with. The available sources do not support declaring either USDT or USDC universally better for payments or transfers.
Because supported networks and issuer arrangements can change, verify them at the time you send. Circle’s network list was stated as of September 16, 2026; Tether’s listed network redemption change took effect September 1, 2025.
