For a payment that must be paid out in euros, EURC is usually the better fit: Circle says it is redeemable 1:1 for euros. USDC is pegged to the U.S. dollar and makes more sense when the recipient needs dollars or the service specifically requires USDC. In the European Economic Area (EEA), Circle’s retail redemption process also requires an eligible holder to provide an EEA IBAN; EURC payouts use a SEPA-capable account, while USDC payouts require an account that can accept USD.
That is a currency-match recommendation, not a claim that EURC is always cheaper, safer, faster, or available to every user. Your country, bank, service, and the exact blockchain network all affect whether a payment or redemption will work.
How EURC and USDC differ
Both are Circle-issued stablecoins, but they target different fiat currencies. Circle describes EURC as euro-backed and redeemable at par for euros; its USDC white paper describes USDC as redeemable 1:1 for U.S. dollars. Those redemption currencies are the key distinction for a euro payment: EURC matches a euro-denominated invoice, while USDC does not.
| Question | EURC | USDC |
|---|---|---|
| Target currency | Euro | U.S. dollar |
| Issuer redemption currency | Euros, at par subject to applicable policy and eligibility | U.S. dollars, at par subject to applicable terms |
| EEA retail bank payout route | EEA IBAN and a bank account able to accept SEPA payments | EEA IBAN and a bank account able to accept USD payments; third-party bank fees may apply |
| Most direct use | Euro payments and euro cash-out | Dollar settlement or a service that specifically requires USDC |
Circle’s EURC FAQ describes the euro redemption commitment (Circle EURC); the USDC white paper describes USDC’s dollar redemption and transfer risks (Circle USDC white paper). If you pay in USDC but the recipient needs euros, a bank, exchange, or payment provider may have to convert the funds. The exchange rate and any fees are set by that provider, not determined by the token’s dollar peg.

Which should you use for a euro payment?
Choose EURC when the obligation and payout are in euros
EURC avoids the mismatch between a dollar-denominated token and a euro-denominated invoice. It is the more direct option if the recipient accepts EURC on the network you intend to use and ultimately wants euros. That does not remove the need to check the recipient’s exchange, wallet, or payment provider: a provider may support EURC on one network and not another.
Choose USDC when the recipient needs dollars or requires USDC
USDC can be appropriate when the recipient settles in dollars, or when a platform explicitly accepts USDC but not EURC. If the recipient will cash out in euros, ask what conversion rate and charges the receiving service or bank applies. Those costs depend on that provider, so there is no universal fee comparison between the two tokens.

How Circle redemption works for EEA retail holders
Circle’s MiCA Redemption Policy, last updated September 15, 2026, says holders have a right to redeem Circle Coins at any time and at par, subject to the policy’s conditions. EURC is issued solely by Circle France. In the EEA, Circle France handles redemption for EEA-established USDC holders; USDC holders established outside the EEA are subject to Circle LLC’s terms instead. Do not assume the EEA process applies to a holder in another region. See Circle’s EEA MiCA Redemption Policy for the applicable terms.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor an EEA retail redemption through Circle France, the holder must satisfy eligibility and identity checks, provide accurate information, and have an EEA IBAN. The payout account must be able to receive SEPA payments for EURC or USD payments for USDC. Circle says the process should take no more than five business days unless it identifies discrepancies. For USDC payouts, third-party bank fees may apply; bank conversion and incoming-deposit charges are outside Circle’s control.

- Check eligibility and bank details. Confirm that Circle’s policy covers your residence and that your EEA bank account can accept the relevant currency and payment rail.
- Complete Circle’s verification and redemption steps. Supply the requested information for KYC/KYT checks. Circle generates a deposit address for the redemption.
- Send the correct asset and verify the transaction. Circle checks the tokens received and their transaction history before processing the payout.
- Allow for processing and possible review. Circle describes a period of up to five business days unless discrepancies arise; this is not a promise of instant settlement.
Non-retail holders seeking redemption through Circle France must open a Circle Mint account for redemption-only service and pass account eligibility checks. Retail holders may also buy or sell through exchanges that accept the token, but exchange access and cash-out terms vary. Circle’s policy does not establish support for every exchange, network, country, or user.
Circle Mint fees are business terms, not a retail price list
Circle Mint is aimed at qualified businesses and wholesale distributors, not a universal retail cash-out route. Its published redemption structure, effective March 15, 2026, has account tiers, daily base fees, monthly net-redemption adjustments and possible credits, as well as tier-specific processing terms. Circle’s example of fee-free daily redemption thresholds—up to $2 million in USDC and €2 million in EURC—is calculated separately by currency for eligible customers under the applicable tier. It should not be read as a free allowance for every holder. Review the current Circle Mint fee schedule and your account terms before relying on a specific fee or threshold.

Network support and irreversible transfers matter
Circle lists EURC across Avalanche, Base, Ethereum, Solana, and Stellar ecosystems. That list does not mean every wallet, exchange, or receiving service accepts EURC on all five networks. Check the exact token-and-network combination with the recipient before sending. The cited Circle USDC white paper does not provide a full comparative network list, so confirm USDC support with the relevant service as well.
Circle warns that “USDC transactions are not reversible.” Sending an asset to the wrong address or network, or losing access to the associated private key, can mean permanent loss of access or claim. Confirm the asset, network, address, and recipient requirements before you transfer. A small test transfer may help where the receiving service supports it, but it does not replace checking compatibility.

What Circle’s reported circulation figures do—and do not—show
As of October 5, 2026, Circle reported $74.1 billion USDC in circulation and $74.3 billion in total USDC reserves on its transparency page. Circle’s EURC product page reported €422.4 million EURC in circulation on the same date; the EURC reserve total is not stated in the cited page text. Circle says its USDC and EURC reserves are highly liquid fiat reserves held separately from Circle’s operating funds. These are dated issuer disclosures, not an independent comparison of trading depth, a guarantee of future liquidity, or proof that either token will be equally easy to redeem through every venue.
Quick Recap
Decision checklist
- The recipient wants euros and accepts EURC: EURC is the closer currency match, provided the wallet, network, and payout route are supported.
- The recipient wants dollars or requires USDC: USDC is the natural fit; establish the conversion route and costs if the final payout must be euros.
- You plan to redeem directly with Circle in the EEA: Check policy eligibility, verification requirements, EEA IBAN requirements, and whether your bank accepts the relevant SEPA or USD payment.
- You rely on an exchange or payment provider: Verify its country availability, token listing, supported network, conversion rate, withdrawal method, and fees directly.
