USB Type-B is a family of USB connector shapes. In everyday cable descriptions, “USB-B” often means the standard, roughly square connector used on some peripherals; Mini-B and Micro-B are separate, smaller members of the Type-B family. The name identifies a connector form, not a transfer speed. To choose a cable, match both ends to the ports on the device and host.
What does USB Type-B mean?
USB-IF standards cover several Type-B connector forms. “Standard USB-B” refers to the standard B-series connector; Mini-B and Micro-B are distinct, smaller connector categories. Because people sometimes use “USB-B” to mean either the standard shape or the wider family, check the actual port rather than relying on the label alone.
USB-IF’s USB 2.0 Cable and Connector Class Document, dated August 1, 2007, is one standards reference for USB cable and connector terminology.

How is standard USB-B different from Mini-B and Micro-B?
The forms differ physically, so their cables are not interchangeable simply because all are called Type-B. USB-IF compliance information lists standard A-series and B-series connectors as four-pin, and Mini-B and Micro-B connector categories as five-pin. Pin count helps distinguish the categories technically, but it does not replace checking the device’s port or documentation.

Some USB 3.x equipment also uses a distinct Type-B form. Do not assume a port that looks broadly B-shaped takes the same cable as a standard USB-B, Mini-B, or Micro-B port.
Does Type-B tell you the USB speed?
No. Type-B describes connector form, not a transfer-rate rating. A connector name alone does not establish a device’s USB generation, data capability, or electrical characteristics. USB-IF’s Document Library lists a USB 2.0 specification package dated June 3, 2025, alongside later engineering change notices; the connector label by itself still is not enough to identify the capability of a particular product.

Which cable fits a USB-B port?
If the device has a standard USB-B port, a USB-A-to-USB-B cable may fit when its other end matches the host’s USB-A port. For example, a product listing describes a USB 2.0 Type-A male to Type-B male cable; that establishes the cable category, not compatibility with every device or host. - Check the host port and choose a cable with the matching connector on that end.
- Consult the device documentation for its stated USB generation and capabilities; the connector shape alone does not supply that information.
A printer with standard USB-B, for instance, may need a USB-A-to-USB-B cable if the computer has USB-A. If either end has a different shape, choose a cable that matches those actual ports instead of buying one based only on the phrase “Type-B.”
