USB Power Delivery (USB PD) is a USB-IF specification that lets compatible devices negotiate how much power to send over a USB connection. It can support different power levels and even change the direction of power flow. The actual power depends on what the device, charger, and cable all support; a USB-C connector alone does not guarantee USB PD or a particular wattage.
What does USB Power Delivery mean?
USB PD is a power-delivery protocol: compatible equipment communicates to negotiate power over a USB connection. It is designed to provide flexible power alongside data over one cable, from low-power devices to higher-power applications. USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF) describes it this way: “The USB Power Delivery (USB PD) Specification enables the maximum functionality of USB by providing more flexible power delivery along with data over a single cable.”
USB PD does not mean that every connected device receives the charger’s maximum output. The source and the device receiving power negotiate a level they can support, and the cable must also be suitable for that power.
Is USB PD the same as USB-C?
No. USB PD is the power-delivery specification; USB Type-C is the connector and cable system. They are related, but the shape of a USB-C port or plug does not establish that a product supports USB PD or any particular power level. Check the specifications for the device, charger, and cable rather than relying on the connector alone. USB-IF’s USB Charger (USB Power Delivery) overview describes the power negotiation and cable requirements.
#1 Best Overall
- the Only Charger You Need: Say goodbye to your old chargers. Anker 735 Charger (Nano II 65W) has the power you need to fast charge your phone, tablet, and USB-C notebook from a single charger.
- High-Speed Charging: Connect a single device to get a 65W max charge—that’s enough to power up a 2020 MacBook Pro 13″ at full speed. And when you connect three devices, power will be distributed efficiently between ports to ensure you get the best charge.
- Compact Design: Power up to 3 devices with a charger that’s roughly the size of an AirPods Pro case.
- Powered by GaN II Technology: With a 100% increase in operating frequency, an innovative stacked design, and an upgraded circuit board structure, GaN II technology makes our latest charger smaller without sacrificing a drop of power.
- What You Get: Anker 735 Charger (Nano II 65W) / PowerPort III 3-Port 65W Pod, welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
How much power can USB PD deliver?
USB-IF’s overview of USB PD Revision 3.1 says the specification expanded the earlier 100 W limit to as much as 240 W over a full-featured USB Type-C cable and connector. The overview associates the newer fixed voltage levels with these maximum power figures:
| Fixed voltage level | Maximum power described by USB-IF |
|---|---|
| 28 V | Up to 140 W |
| 36 V | Up to 180 W |
| 48 V | Up to 240 W |
USB PD also includes an adjustable-voltage supply mode, which lets a device request an intermediate voltage up to the maximum fixed voltage offered by the charger. These are specification capabilities, not a promise that every USB-C charger, cable, or device can deliver 240 W. The connection is limited by the capabilities of its components.

- What You Get: Anker 317 Charger (100W), 5ft / 1.5m USB C to USB C cable (placed behind the plastic tray compartment), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Can power flow in either direction?
Yes. USB-IF says either the host or peripheral may provide power under USB PD, so power is not necessarily one-way from a wall charger to a device. Depending on the products and setup, a wall-powered monitor could charge a laptop while displaying its picture; a laptop or charger could pass power through a laptop’s USB ports; or a battery-powered device could temporarily provide power to another device. These are possible configurations, not features guaranteed by every product.

How to check whether a USB PD setup will work
Before connecting equipment for charging or pass-through power, compare the supported capabilities of each part of the setup:

- Keep Nearby Outlets Open — At just 1.5 × 1.2 × 1.9 in and 2.2 oz, this mini GaN charger won’t crowd your power strip. Foldable prongs tuck flat into any bag.
- Skip the Long Wait — In INIU lab testing, 30W USB-C charged an iPhone 17 from 0% to 72% in 30 minutes—about one coffee break before work, class, or travel.
- Charge Two Without Guesswork — USB-C delivers up to 30W alone and USB-A up to 18W alone. Plug in both for 15W total—ideal for a phone plus earbuds or a watch overnight.
- Stop Hunting for Chargers — Two chargers and two 5 ft 60W nylon-braided cables keep one home and one packed. They outlast cheap rubber cables; silicone ties stop tangles.
- Charge with More Confidence — ETL certified. INIU testing showed a peak temperature 50°F below the 170°F safety limit, plus overcurrent, overheating, and short-circuit protection.
- Device: Check the power levels and charging profiles it accepts.
- Charger or other power source: Check its output capability and the profiles it offers.
- Cable: Confirm that its power rating suits the intended level, particularly for high-power charging.
- Ports and power direction: Check whether each port can act as a source, a sink (the device receiving power), or both for the intended setup.
USB-IF’s overview also explains that USB PD is designed to coexist with USB Battery Charging implementations. Implementers adding battery-charging capability or supporting host adapters such as docks or ACA devices should consult the relevant USB Battery Charging Specification as well.

USB-IF’s document library lists USB Power Delivery Specification Revision 3.2 Version 1.2, dated September 14, 2026. That listing is newer than the USB-IF overview’s description of Revision 3.1 and its 240 W capability; the 240 W figure above is specifically attributed to that Revision 3.1 overview. USB-IF also lists a USB PD Compliance Test Specification for Q3 2026, dated May 31, 2026. A listed specification or test document does not, by itself, establish that a particular retail product is certified. See the USB-IF document library.
