A USB drive adapter connects a USB flash drive to a device with a different USB port. For a phone or tablet, the adapter must match the port and the device must support USB host or OTG access to external storage; the connector alone does not guarantee the drive will work.
What is a USB drive adapter?
A USB drive adapter is a connector or short cable that changes the connection between a USB drive and a device. A common example is a USB-C-to-USB-A adapter: its USB-C end plugs into the phone, tablet, or computer, while its USB-A port accepts a conventional USB flash drive.
For phones and tablets, the term often refers to an OTG adapter. USB On-The-Go (OTG) lets a compatible portable device communicate directly with USB peripherals; when you connect a flash drive this way, the phone or tablet acts as the USB host. The adapter changes the connector path, while host or OTG support enables the device to communicate with the drive. USB-IF’s overview of USB On-The-Go and Embedded Host describes these capabilities for portable devices and non-PC hosts.

How to connect a USB drive to a phone or tablet
- Identify the device’s port. Match it to the device-side connector: USB-C, Micro-USB, or Lightning. A USB-C adapter will not fit a Lightning or Micro-USB port.
- Check host and storage support. Consult the device maker’s documentation for USB host or OTG support and external-storage support. Compatibility varies by device, so a matching connector is not sufficient on its own.
- Connect the drive. Plug the USB-A flash drive into the adapter, then connect the adapter to the phone or tablet. If the device supports the connection, use its file-management app to access the drive.
- If the drive does not appear, check its format and partition layout. For iPhone external storage, Apple requires a single data partition and lists APFS, encrypted APFS, macOS Extended (HFS+), exFAT (FAT64), FAT32, or FAT as supported formats.
- Check power needs. Apple notes that external hard drives often need external power when used with an iPhone. In specified USB-C cases, a powered hub may be used.
What to check before choosing an adapter
- Connector match: The adapter’s device-side plug must match the port on your phone, tablet, or computer.
- Host and storage support: For a phone or tablet, verify USB host/OTG support and external-storage access for your exact device.
- Drive format and partition: A device may not read a drive if its format or partition layout is incompatible. Apple’s iPhone requirements are platform-specific and should not be assumed to apply to other devices.
- Power: A flash drive and an external hard drive can have different power demands. Check the device maker’s guidance if the drive fails to connect reliably.
- Speed: The usable transfer rate depends on the host, adapter, drive, and connection. A maximum speed printed for an adapter does not establish the speed of the entire setup.
- Manufacturer guidance: Follow instructions for the specific device. Samsung, for example, says it does not recommend a dual USB Type-C adapter with its Galaxy phone or tablet. Samsung support
Adapter or OTG flash drive?
Choose an adapter when you want to use a USB-A flash drive you already own. Choose an OTG flash drive when you want a drive with a phone-compatible connector built in and would rather avoid a separate adapter. Either option still depends on the phone or tablet supporting the connection and external storage.
