Neither USB-C nor a 3.5 mm headphone jack guarantees better sound. A 3.5 mm output typically converts digital audio to analog inside the phone. With USB-C digital audio, conversion happens in the connected adapter or headphones. The quality of those components—and their match with your headphones—matters more than the connector.
Where does the audio conversion happen?
Audio stored or streamed by a phone is digital, but headphones need an analog signal. A digital-to-analog converter (DAC) handles that change; an amplifier then supplies the signal needed to drive the headphones.
- 3.5 mm jack: The phone typically performs the conversion and amplification before sending analog audio through the jack.
- USB-C digital audio: The phone sends digital audio to a compatible accessory. A DAC in the adapter or headphones converts it to analog. Android’s documentation describes this signal path and notes that moving conversion outside the phone can offer engineering advantages, but does not establish that every USB-C setup sounds better. Android Open Source Project documentation
Both arrangements require conversion somewhere. The connector alone does not tell you how well the DAC, amplifier, or phone’s audio processing performs.

What actually determines which sounds better?
The result depends on the entire playback chain: the phone’s audio processing and output limits, the DAC and amplifier, the headphones, and listening level. A well-designed USB-C DAC can outperform a weak built-in headphone output; a poorly matched or poorly performing adapter can sound worse. USB-C is a connection standard, not an audio-quality rating.

- The USB-C to 3.5mm Headphone Jack Adapter lets you connect devices that use a standard 3.5mm audio plug - like headphones or speakers - to your USB-C devices
- Works with all devices that have a USB-C connector and support iOS 10 or later.
When reliable measurements are available, compare noise, distortion, frequency response, and output voltage or power. Output capability matters if an adapter or phone cannot drive your particular headphones adequately. Compare options with the same headphones and source material at closely matched listening levels; a louder option can seem better even when it is not more accurate.

- Whether the output adequately drives your headphones.
- Support for microphones, calls, buttons, and inline controls.
- Price, durability, and convenience.
These are comparison criteria, not a claim that any particular phone or adapter has been measured against another. Official documentation explains the connection and compatibility requirements, but does not provide a controlled, matched-level sound-quality comparison of named phones and adapters.

Check the exact phone model’s current specifications and compatibility guidance. Google’s Pixel guidance says Pixel phones work with USB-C audio accessories and identifies Pixel 3a, 4a, and 4a (5G) as models with a 3.5 mm jack; other Pixel phones can use an adapter for 3.5 mm accessories. Shielded enamel wire can still ensure stable signal transmission with daily use. Metal-coated connectors for better contact ensure stable and lossless audio signal transmission
- 【Warm Tips】 If your USB C device includes a 3.5mm audio jack, this adapter may not support phone calls. For example, some models for Galaxy (S9/S8/S10, Note 9/Note 8) and for iPad Pro (11" / 12.9", including iPad Pro 2018) may not support phone calls or music control
If your phone sends digital audio over USB-C, use an adapter specified to contain a DAC. Android’s adapter documentation describes conversion of two digital output channels to analog; a simple cable does not necessarily include that conversion. Avoid assuming a passive analog adapter will work unless the phone is documented to support analog audio accessory mode. Android Open Source Project: USB audio

What else should you check besides sound?
Compatibility can affect basic functions, not just playback. Google recommends confirming that the device uses USB-C digital audio and checking sound settings, because some devices require USB audio to be enabled. It also notes that some devices may not support calls through USB-C earbuds. Google Pixel Help: use Pixel USB-C earbuds
If you are replacing wired headphones, confirm digital-audio support for the specific phone and accessory before buying. Check microphone, call, and control support separately; a connection that plays music may not provide every function you expect.
