In the Associated Press’s October 5, 2026 morning snapshot, U.S. stocks stayed close to record territory even as oil prices swung between $100 and $103 a barrel. The S&P 500 was up 0.2%, the Dow was down 0.2%, and the Nasdaq Composite was up 0.5% as of 9:35 a.m. Eastern. These were morning readings, not closing prices or current market levels.
How the major U.S. indexes moved
The indexes were mixed, rather than moving together. The S&P 500 rose 0.2% and remained within 0.8% of its summer all-time high. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 103 points, or 0.2%. The Nasdaq Composite gained 0.5% and was on track to set its own record. All three figures were reported at 9:35 a.m. Eastern on October 5, 2026, by the Associated Press, as syndicated by NY1.
Why oil prices were swinging
Brent crude traded in a wide morning range, moving between $100 and $103 per barrel. Its latest price cited in the AP report was $101.83, down 0.4%. That latest quote is distinct from the wider intraday range.
The report linked the uncertainty to questions about when the war with Iran would allow the global crude industry to return to normal. It said the uncertainty had helped push bond yields higher; it did not establish a more specific forecast for oil supply or prices.

How Treasury yields can matter for stocks
The 10-year U.S. Treasury yield rose to 5.30% from 5.28% late Friday, according to the AP report. The report’s explanation was that higher yields can make borrowing more expensive and make investors less willing to pay high prices for stocks and other investments. That is a general pressure channel, not proof that yields alone determined the indexes’ moves that morning.
Deal announcements moved individual shares
Company-specific acquisition news produced much larger moves in the named stocks than the broad indexes’ changes. The AP report described proposed terms and October 5 share-price reactions, not completed transactions.

Markets abroad were mixed in the same report: France’s CAC 40 fell 0.7%, while Japan’s Nikkei 225 gained 2.4%. Those figures, like the U.S. index readings, describe the October 5 morning snapshot and should not be treated as current levels.
