About 9,261 BTC, valued at roughly $770 million at the time of reporting, was transferred to Coinbase Prime over October 6–7, 2026, according to Cointelegraph. The reported destination does not establish that the bitcoin was sold, and the U.S. government had not publicly confirmed the transfer’s purpose in the report.
What moved, and when?
Cointelegraph reported that 9,261 BTC moved to Coinbase Prime over two days, October 6 and 7, 2026. Its approximately $770 million valuation is a contemporaneous estimate in that report, not an official government accounting. Cointelegraph credited Galaxy Research with tracing the flows and said it had contacted the U.S. Marshals Service and Department of Justice for comment.
The evidence has three distinct levels: blockchain transactions show coins moving between addresses; analytics firms infer which wallets may belong to the government and where funds originated; an agency statement would be needed to confirm the government’s purpose or disposition. The reporting identifies the first two, but does not provide official confirmation of the third.

No sale is established by the reported transfer. A deposit to Coinbase Prime is a movement to an institutional platform, not proof of a completed sale or liquidation.

An earlier analysis by Arkham described government-linked deposits to Coinbase as potentially reflecting custody consolidation, internal portfolio management, or preparation for liquidation. These are possible explanations for such movements, not evidence of what happened in this October transfer. Arkham’s analysis also describes Coinbase Prime as providing institutional custody and other services.
Why move seized Bitcoin to Coinbase Prime?
One plausible explanation is custody. Cointelegraph reported that Coinbase Prime has served as a custody provider for U.S. Marshals Service seized assets since 2024. That relationship makes a custody transfer credible, but it does not confirm that custody was the purpose of this particular movement.

The U.S. Marshals Service or Department of Justice would need to confirm the purpose or disposition. Without that, custody, internal management, and preparation for a possible sale remain explanations rather than established facts.

Cointelegraph attributed the source breakdown to Galaxy Research. The report said roughly half of the transferred bitcoin was recovered from the Bitfinex hackers and another portion came from known Binance seizures. Galaxy also identified 2,456 BTC in holdings whose prior government ownership had not been identified publicly, and suggested they may represent newer law-enforcement seizures.

The White House established the Strategic Bitcoin Reserve and United States Digital Asset Stockpile by executive order on March 6, 2025. The order says qualifying bitcoin that is finally forfeited and held by the Treasury, subject to specified requirements and releases, is to be included in the Reserve. It states: “Government BTC deposited into the Strategic Bitcoin Reserve shall not be sold and shall be maintained as reserve assets of the United States utilized to meet governmental objectives in accordance with applicable law.” Read the executive order.

The order does not establish that all bitcoin in the reported transfer had already been placed in the Reserve. It also treats other forfeited digital assets separately through the Digital Asset Stockpile and provides for lawful stewardship, court orders, victim returns, law-enforcement operations, equitable sharing, and specified statutory requirements. The reported transfer alone therefore does not show that the order was violated.
