The United States suspended consular services at its embassy and consulates in Brazil on October 2, 2026, citing security concerns. Australia also closed its embassy in Brasília that day and advised Australians to avoid US diplomatic facilities. Brazil’s Federal Police searched two locations as part of an inquiry into suspected plans targeting those facilities, but said its initial work had not corroborated the indicated risks. The public information does not establish that the measures were caused by Brazil’s October 4 election or that diplomatic relations were severed.
What the United States and Australia did
The measures were temporary service and access actions announced for October 2, not an announced break in diplomatic relations.
| Country | Measure reported | Scope and advice |
|---|---|---|
| United States | Suspended consular services on October 2, 2026, citing security concerns. | The suspension covered the US embassy and consulates in Brazil. The US notice asked citizens needing assistance not to visit those facilities and to contact the appropriate duty officer. Associated Press and Al Jazeera reported the action. |
| Australia | Closed its embassy in Brasília on October 2, 2026. | The embassy cited the US alert and advised Australians to avoid US diplomatic facilities in Brazil. People needing urgent consular help were directed to Australia’s Consular Emergency Centre in Canberra. Australian Embassy in Brazil |
The available notices describe the United States’ action as a suspension of consular services, not a confirmed closure of all diplomatic activity. Australia’s notice specified that its Brasília embassy was closed on October 2. The source information does not establish later reopening details, so check the live embassy notices before travelling to a facility.

What Brazil’s Federal Police said about the suspected threat
On October 2, Brazil’s Federal Police said it had executed two preventive search-and-seizure warrants: one in São Paulo and one near the Federal District. The inquiry concerned suspected planning of acts that could endanger US diplomatic facilities in Brazil. Police said the operation followed ongoing cooperation with foreign intelligence agencies. Police reported that investigators had not found evidence corroborating the risks initially indicated and had not identified suspects linked to criminal organizations. They were analyzing seized communications equipment and media, and said the investigation was continuing. That preliminary finding does not establish that no threat existed, and it does not mean the inquiry was closed.
What is—and is not—known about the election connection
The closures came two days before Brazil’s presidential election, scheduled for Sunday, October 4, 2026. Associated Press identified incumbent Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Senator Flávio Bolsonaro as the main contenders, and reported that a runoff would take place on October 25 if no candidate received more than 50 percent. The timing is clear, but the public US notice cited security concerns without detailing the threat or publicly tying it to the election. The State Department said it was working closely with Brazilian counterparts. The Federal Police described suspected planning and preliminary investigative results; it did not announce a confirmed plot, name a suspect, or identify a criminal organization. The available information therefore does not support claims that the closures were intended to influence the election, that police disproved a threat, or that the measures marked a diplomatic rupture.
