A proposed Urdu Habba at the steps of Karnataka’s Vidhana Soudha has drawn objections from BJP representatives and pro-Kannada voices. It is not established as an approved or confirmed event: Chief Minister D K Shivakumar said permission had not been granted for a non-government programme on the steps, while minister U T Khader said he had only raised the idea and would consult those opposed.

What was proposed?

Khader proposed taking the annual Urdu Sahitya award programme out of a hall and staging an Urdu Habba in the open at Vidhana Soudha, the seat of Karnataka’s legislature and government. In the proposal as reported by Hindustan Times on October 2, 2026, the event was intended for November 9.

Khader described the proposed programme as a way for people from different communities to encounter Urdu language, literature, culture, cuisine and art. Those were his stated aims, not evidence that the event was approved or took place.

Why did the proposal face opposition?

BJP representatives objected to using the Vidhana Soudha venue, arguing that Kannada should have prominence at the seat of state government and legislature. Coverage by India Today also described objections about whether comparable programmes would be organised for other language communities. These are arguments raised by opponents, not established findings about Karnataka’s language policy or government practice.

Opposition was not limited to BJP representatives. Karnataka Rakshana Vedike state president T A Narayana Gowda urged the government to withdraw the proposal and said his organisation would oppose the event if it went ahead at Vidhana Soudha, according to Public TV English. The reporting does not establish that all Kannada speakers or organisations shared these views.

Was the Urdu Habba approved?

No approval is established in the available reporting. The Times of India reported on October 1, 2026, that Shivakumar said: “There is no scope for any non-govt programme to be held on the grand steps of Vidhana Soudha,” and that permission had not been granted. The newspaper attributed that wording to the chief minister; it is not a quotation from an official government order.

Khader said he had only mooted the idea and that the government would consult those opposed. Another report described a possible review of the venue to avoid unrest. The coverage does not document a final approval, cancellation or alternative site, so the proposal’s eventual outcome remains unsettled.

When was the proposed event supposed to take place?

Hindustan Times reported November 9 as the proposed date, but it should not be treated as confirmed. The retrieved India Today report includes a conflicting reference to September 9 while also describing the proposal in connection with Urdu Day. The available coverage does not resolve that discrepancy.
