If you are leaving Urban VPN, the fastest answer is this: Proton VPN and Windscribe are the two free plans in this comparison with published terms you can check. Proton’s free plan has no time, speed or data limits, but it allows one device and does not guarantee streaming. Windscribe’s free plan on Windows is capped at 10 GB a month after email confirmation, but it allows unlimited devices. This guide does not rank providers or claim that any service is fastest, safest or best for streaming. It compares what each provider publishes about its plans, and where that information is missing, it says so.
What “free” means with Urban VPN today
Urban VPN does not offer one free tier. According to its “Why UrbanVPN is free?” page, browser and desktop users get a free connection with no bandwidth limit, Android users get 100 MB per day, and iOS is available only with Premium. The same page says free use is for non-commercial purposes on browsers. These are the page’s current statements, and they may change, so check them against your platform before you decide to stay or switch.
That split matters for the switch decision. A reader who uses Urban VPN on a laptop and a phone may be working under two different rules. Before you choose an alternative, write down which devices you actually use the service on.
Free alternatives with published plan terms
Proton VPN: no caps, one device
Proton’s comparison page says its Free plan has no time, speed or data limits. The company also states that the plan is limited to one device, that streaming services are guaranteed only on paid plans, and that paid plans add faster browsing, worldwide streaming access and advanced features. Proton says Free has the same security level, VPN protocols and strict no-logs policy as its paid plans. That is a provider claim, not an independent audit result.

In Proton’s own words: “We don’t impose any time, speed, or data limits if you’re on the Proton VPN Free plan.” The statement is company copy, and the one-device restriction applies alongside it.
Choose Proton’s free plan if you want an uncapped service on one device and do not need a guaranteed streaming library. If you need two or more devices or reliable streaming, the free plan will not meet that need as published.

Windscribe: monthly data cap, unlimited devices
Windscribe’s Windows page lists its Free plan at 10 GB per month when you confirm your email address, and 2 GB per month without confirmation. It lists servers in 10 countries and unlimited device connections on Free. The same page lists Pro at unlimited data with 69+ countries and 135+ cities. Because the page is written for Windows, check your own platform’s listing before you assume the same limits apply.
Windscribe describes its free app as using the same core app and security features as paid users. As with Proton, this is the provider’s own claim.

PrivadoVPN: an adjacent free option
PrivadoVPN is not one of the two documented free-plan options above, but its free tier belongs in the comparison. Its pricing page says free users get 10 GB every 30 days and are limited to one device and a small set of server locations. Its free-plan page lists ten named countries. Paid plans provide unlimited usage, up to 10 devices and the full server list. The free-plan page also makes privacy and performance claims. Those are PrivadoVPN’s marketing statements and have not been independently verified here.

Paid upgrades: what to compare beyond the monthly price
If you stay with Urban VPN, Premium gives dedicated Premium servers and protection for up to eight devices. Its pricing page lists several paid term options. A low advertised monthly equivalent can hide the renewal cost, so compare the price you will pay after the first term, not just the first payment.
Best Value
- Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
The same applies to the alternatives. None of the reviewed pages for Proton, Windscribe or PrivadoVPN states a renewal price in the material reviewed, so you should check the current checkout page for each term length in your region before comparing.
How to choose
- You use one device and want no data cap: Proton VPN’s free plan matches that description on Proton’s page. Streaming is not guaranteed on Free.
- You use several devices on Windows and stay under 10 GB a month: Windscribe’s Free plan allows unlimited devices, with the cap and platform scope noted above.
- You need streaming to work reliably: none of the free plans reviewed guarantees it. Compare paid plans, and use any trial or refund window to test the services you actually watch.
- You need more than one device and a clear data allowance on Android or iOS: check each provider’s mobile app terms directly, because the reviewed pages cover Windows, browser or general plan details rather than full mobile terms.
Limits of this comparison
This article is based on plan pages published by each provider, checked on October 7, 2026. Provider pages are evidence of what the company says it offers. They are not independent tests of speed, reliability, streaming success or privacy. The VPNRatings editorial shortlist, updated September 10, 2026, lists speed under load, independently audited privacy, streaming reliability, renewal price and usability as useful criteria, but it does not establish a winner for this comparison. Before you buy, recheck free-data allowances, device counts, platform support, trial and refund terms, and regional pricing on each provider’s current page.
