Jonathan Spalletta was convicted by a federal jury on computer-fraud and money-laundering counts tied to two April 2021 hacks of cryptocurrency exchange Uranium Finance. The U.S. Department of Justice says he used laundered proceeds to buy rare Pokémon and Magic: The Gathering collectibles, including a Black Lotus card it valued at approximately $500,000 as a purchase. The conviction is not a sentence: the DOJ announcement lists statutory maximums but does not report a sentencing decision.

What happened in the Uranium Finance case?

On October 7, 2026, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York announced that a jury convicted Spalletta, also known as “Cthulhon” and “Jspalletta.” The six-day trial was before U.S. District Judge Jed S. Rakoff. The case concerned two hacks of Uranium Finance in April 2021. Uranium Finance let users deposit and exchange cryptocurrencies through liquidity pools.

According to the DOJ’s conviction announcement, the April 8 hack involved a deceptive sequence of transactions with the exchange’s smart contract. Prosecutors said the transactions let Spalletta withdraw more cryptocurrency “rewards” than he was authorized to receive. The announcement says he later moved proceeds through a complex series of cryptocurrency transactions, including Tornado Cash.

The announcement confirms two hacks but does not detail the second hack’s mechanics. It therefore does not support a more specific technical account of that incident.

Has the Uranium Finance hacker been sentenced?

The October 7, 2026 DOJ announcement reports a jury conviction, not a sentence. It lists maximum statutory prison terms of 10 years for computer fraud and 20 years for money laundering. Those are maximums set by law; they do not establish the punishment the judge will impose. The DOJ states that any sentence will be determined by a judge.

The announcement does not report a sentencing decision or provide later court developments. Accordingly, it supports saying Spalletta was convicted, but not that he has been sentenced.
