Upstart says most states have no minimum credit-score requirement for loans on its marketplace, but that does not guarantee approval or a low rate. Its current published APR range is 6.3%–35.99%, and your actual offer depends on your circumstances and state. The practical question is whether your personalized APR, fees, and deposited amount make sense—not whether you meet a single score threshold.

Can I get a personal loan with fair credit?

Possibly, but a fair or average credit score alone cannot tell you whether you will qualify. Upstart is a marketplace, not the lender: regulated financial institutions make the loans. Upstart says applications are assessed using information beyond a conventional credit score, including income, employment, and other details. Some partner lenders set their own minimum score requirements, even though Upstart says most states have no minimum score requirement for marketplace loans.

Upstart’s SEC filing describes applications being screened against lender hard-credit criteria before a model-based risk evaluation, with pricing also accounting for lender requirements. That process is not a promise that a particular applicant will be approved, receive a particular rate, or do better than with another lender. Its official eligibility information is at Upstart’s loan eligibility page, and its disclosure states, “Upstart is not the lender. All loans on Upstart’s marketplace are made by regulated financial institutions.”

What is the minimum credit score for an Upstart loan?

Upstart says there is no minimum credit score requirement in most states for personal loans on its marketplace. However, some lending partners have their own minimums, and credit score is only one part of eligibility. Income, employment, and other applicant details also matter. “No minimum in most states” should therefore be read as a description of the marketplace’s general policy, not as guaranteed access for every applicant or a statement that credit history has no effect.

What rates, loan amounts, and terms does Upstart advertise?

Upstart’s personal-loan page lists fixed, unsecured loan APRs of 6.3%–35.99%. Upstart says this range is based on five-year rates offered in June 2026; rates vary by state and applicant, and the lowest rates go to the most qualified applicants. This is Upstart’s published range, not an estimate of what a fair-credit borrower will receive. See the Upstart personal-loan page for its current disclosure.

Upstart’s application page lists loan amounts from $1,000 to $75,000 and terms of three or five years, subject to state availability and qualification. The displayed range does not establish that every amount or term is available to each applicant. Details are on Upstart’s application page.

What fees does Upstart charge?

An origination fee can reduce the money deposited even though the loan’s principal is larger. Upstart’s representative example is a $10,000 loan over 60 months at a 19.08% interest rate, with an $815 origination fee. The APR is 23.37%, the borrower receives $9,185 after the fee is deducted, and the stated repayment is 60 monthly payments of $261. These are figures from Upstart’s published example, not a quote or forecast for an individual borrower; the page bases its APR range on five-year rates offered in June 2026.

The example shows why the interest rate alone is not enough for comparison: the origination fee reduces cash received, while APR reflects borrowing cost in a way that accounts for fees. Review Upstart’s explanation of what an origination fee is alongside the terms of any actual offer.

Will checking my rate affect my credit?

Upstart says its initial rate check uses a soft inquiry that does not affect your credit score. If you accept the rate and proceed with the application, it makes a hard inquiry, which can affect your score. In Upstart’s words: “When you check your rate, we check your credit report. This initial (soft) inquiry will not affect your credit score.” The distinction is between checking a rate and moving forward with the application; review the product disclosure before proceeding.

Can I pay off an Upstart loan early?

Upstart says borrowers may prepay at any time without a fee or penalty. Confirm the terms in your loan documents, and compare the prepayment policy alongside APR and total repayment when weighing offers. Upstart’s disclosure is available on its personal-loan page.

How should I compare an Upstart offer with other loans?

Compare written, personalized offers on the same basis. An advertised minimum APR is not equivalent to another lender’s typical or personalized rate, and different terms can change both monthly payments and total cost.

  • APR: Compare the offered APR, including how fees affect cost.
  • Origination fee and net proceeds: Check the fee and the amount that will actually be deposited.
  • Monthly payment and term: Make sure the payment fits your budget, and note whether the term is three or five years.
  • Total repayment: Compare what you will repay over the full term, not just the monthly amount.
  • Prepayment policy: Check whether paying early triggers a fee or penalty.
  • Availability: Confirm that the loan and its terms are available in your state.

Upstart’s loan-comparison guidance also emphasizes comparing APR because fees can make loans with similar interest rates cost different amounts.

Upstart personal-loan review: what the terms mean for fair-credit borrowers

Upstart’s marketplace may be worth considering if you have fair or average credit and want to check whether a lender will make you an offer. Its no-minimum-score policy in most states and broader underwriting criteria do not establish that it will approve you or offer an affordable loan. The published APR range is wide, and its example demonstrates how an origination fee affects both proceeds and cost. A rate check is a soft inquiry; proceeding with an application involves a hard inquiry. The decision should rest on the actual offer’s APR, fee, deposited amount, monthly payment, term, and total repayment compared with alternatives.
