A browser-based anime upscale is an estimate, not a recovery of the image’s original pixels. The model can generate plausible detail, but that detail may be invented or distorted. And even a suitable model can behave differently depending on how the browser and device run it. To judge an upscale, inspect both the image and the execution path—not just the model name.
What an anime upscaler can—and cannot—recover
Upscaling starts with a smaller image and produces a larger one. A learned model estimates what might belong in the missing pixels; it does not know what the original high-resolution image contained. A convincing eye highlight or hair strand may look plausible without matching the source artwork.
The Real-ESRGAN paper explains why that distinction matters. Its training process uses synthetic image degradations, which approximate real-world damage rather than covering every possible case. The authors identify twisted lines, unpleasant artifacts from GAN training, and complicated degradations outside the training distribution that may remain or be amplified. Those limitations apply to model output generally; they are not evidence that every anime upscale will show these defects. Read the Real-ESRGAN paper.

The web-realesrgan project lists two anime-oriented Real-ESRGAN variants: RealESRGAN-animevideov3 (anime_fast) and RealESRGAN_x4plus_anime_6B (anime_plus). Its model table lists both at 4×. The same implementation also lists general-purpose fast and plus variants, as well as Real-CUGAN options. A model label is a starting point, not a guarantee of the best-looking result for a particular frame. See the project’s model and browser documentation.

Compare alternatives using the same source image, output scale, and inspection crop. Look closely at:
- Linework: Are outlines continuous, or do they bend, break, or change thickness unexpectedly?
- Faces and small features: Do eyes, mouths, fingers, and other compact shapes remain coherent, or has the model redrawn them?
- Fine detail: Check hair strands, lettering, and thin outlines for invented marks or lost features.
- Edges and texture: Watch for ringing, halos, oversharpening, softened edges, or texture that looks unlike the surrounding artwork.
- Scale: Confirm that the model supports the enlargement you want; the two cited Real-ESRGAN anime variants are listed at 4×.
When the image is important, inspect the result at both fit-to-screen size and at 100% zoom. The smaller view shows whether the overall image reads well; the close view exposes local distortions that may disappear when the result is scaled down.

What the browser adds to the result
A browser upscaler has two separate jobs: choose a model that can produce a useful reconstruction, then run it on the available browser and device. The cited web-realesrgan implementation documents WebGPU and WebGL execution. It says the first run downloads model files and caches them in browser IndexedDB; transformed models for different tile sizes may require separate downloads. That means a first run and a later run can differ in setup time, and changing tile size may bring another download.
The project maintainer reports that this browser implementation runs more slowly than local processing and recommends official local repositories for processing many images. That is a project-specific report, not a universal browser-versus-desktop benchmark. The same project’s suggestion that Real-CUGAN is faster is also a maintainer recommendation, not an independent comparative test.

Browser services can make different engineering choices. One separate service says its ONNX Runtime Web implementation uses WebGPU with WebGL fallback and tiled inference, and routes between 4× and 2× based on source size and GPU tier. Those are claims about that service’s implementation, not rules that apply to browser upscalers generally. See the service’s description.
Compatibility and speed therefore depend on the particular tool, browser, and device. The cited documentation does not establish current cross-browser support or an independent performance comparison for browser-based anime upscaling. If a tool reports its runtime path, note whether it used WebGPU or a fallback when comparing results or timing.

A practical way to compare browser upscales
- Choose one representative source. Include the kinds of details that matter in your actual images—such as faces, fine hair, or lettering—rather than judging only a smooth background.
- Hold the comparison constant. Use the same input, output scale, and crop for each model or service. If scale differs, you are not comparing like with like.
- Check the model’s supported scale. For the two anime Real-ESRGAN variants listed by
web-realesrgan, the documented scale is 4×. - Inspect the same areas. Compare line consistency, facial features, small details, and edge artifacts at matching zoom levels.
- Separate image quality from execution time. Record first-run time separately from later runs, since downloads and browser caching can affect setup. Note the browser/device and runtime path if the tool exposes them.
- Decide whether browser processing fits the workload. For a single image, convenience may matter most. For a large batch, the project maintainer recommends local processing; that recommendation is specific to the cited implementation.
When local processing is worth considering
If you need to process many images or want to choose among local models, Upscayl documents a desktop workflow with GPU processing, model selection, and batch operations. Its README describes enhancement as guessing possible details and names Real-ESRGAN and Vulkan. It is a desktop alternative, not a browser upscaler, and its documentation does not establish that it will produce a more faithful result for every anime image. See Upscayl’s product information and its README.
For a large batch, local processing may be a better workflow choice than repeatedly uploading or running images in a browser. For either approach, judge the output by how well it preserves the artwork—not by the scale factor or the apparent sophistication of the model.
