The “upgraded Atari 1024STf” was a PC built inside an Atari ST case—not a conventional Atari ST upgrade. In a 2009 project report, Hackaday described replacing the computer’s internal hardware with PC components and reported a 1.6 GHz Pentium Mobile with 1 GB of RAM.
What the Atari 1024STf project changed
The project repurposed a “crippled” Atari 1024 STf case as an enclosure for a modern-at-the-time PC. Hackaday author Mike Szczys summarized the conversion: “The internal hardware was replaced with a microATX board, a picoPSU, Bluetooth and WiFi transceivers, a hard drive, and a slot-fed DVD drive.” Read the 2009 Hackaday project report.
The report also names a 101-key replacement keyboard and a mouse rebuilt around optical-mouse circuitry. It does not say whether any original Atari electronics remained functional, so the conversion should not be described as an Atari computer that simply received faster parts.
Reported PC hardware
| Part or specification | What the report says |
|---|---|
| Processor | 1.6 GHz Pentium Mobile, as reported by Hackaday in 2009; no benchmark or test method is given. |
| Memory | 1 GB RAM, as reported by Hackaday in 2009; the memory type is not stated. |
| Motherboard | MicroATX board; manufacturer and model are not stated. |
| Power supply | PicoPSU; model and electrical requirements are not stated. |
| Other named components | Bluetooth and Wi-Fi transceivers, hard drive, and slot-fed DVD drive; model numbers are not stated. |
| Input devices | 101-key replacement keyboard and a mouse rebuilt around optical-mouse circuitry; models are not stated. |
These are details reported about one historical build, not independently verified performance results or current component recommendations.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Why this is different from upgrading an Atari ST
The Atari ST family has its own memory-expansion and peripheral ecosystem, but those upgrades apply to Atari ST hardware, not automatically to a PC installed in an Atari-shaped case. An Atari ST hardware FAQ describes a 4 MB MMU hardware limit for the ST/STF/STE family and discusses expansion approaches for models with soldered DRAM: Atari ST hardware FAQ. A catalog also lists Atari ST memory boards, storage interfaces, and network adapters: Atari ST hardware catalog.
For historical context, the Atari ST overview characterizes the 1040STF as a 1 MB ST with a built-in double-sided floppy drive: Atari ST overview. That description does not establish that the converted case retained a working original computer.

What the report leaves unknown
The project report documents the broad component categories and the reported processor and memory, but it does not provide the details needed to reproduce the conversion from the article alone.
- The motherboard and picoPSU model numbers are not identified.
- It gives no complete bill of materials, dimensions, wiring diagram, or installation procedure.
- It does not specify whether the original Atari hardware was retained in any functional form.
- It provides no benchmark, compatibility testing, or evidence that Atari software runs on the PC hardware.
Anyone planning a similar case conversion would need to establish board fit, power requirements, connector compatibility, and available enclosure clearance independently; the report supplies no values for those factors.
