If Windows 11 is not showing in Windows Update, your PC may still be eligible: pending Windows 10 updates, Microsoft’s rollout timing, or a compatibility hold can delay the offer. Install pending updates, run Microsoft PC Health Check, and investigate any specific issue it reports before trying another installation method.
Work through the checks below in order. Start with Windows Update and PC Health Check before changing firmware settings or using installation media.
Check Windows Update after installing pending updates
On Windows 10, open:
Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install every available Windows 10 update.
- Restart the PC, even if Windows does not prominently request it.
- Return to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates again.
Windows 11 may not be offered while updates for the current Windows 10 version are still pending. If the upgrade is available, Windows Update displays that Windows 11 is ready. Select Download and install, accept the Software License Terms with Accept and install, and restart when Windows shows Restart required or Pending restart.

Confirm that the Windows 10 version is supported
The direct Windows Update upgrade path requires Windows 10 version 2004 or later, according to Microsoft’s Windows 11 system requirements. To check the installed version, press Windows key + R, enter winver, and press Enter.
If the dialog shows a version earlier than 2004, update Windows 10 first. An old Windows 10 installation may not receive the Windows 11 offer through the normal upgrade path.
Run PC Health Check
Windows Update does not always explain why an upgrade is missing. Microsoft’s PC Health Check app performs a device-specific Windows 11 eligibility check.
- Install Microsoft’s PC Health Check app.
- Right-click Start and select Search.
- Enter pc health check in the Type here to search box.
- Select PC Health Check under Best match.
- Select Check now.
The Check hardware requirements link shown in Windows Update opens Microsoft’s general specifications page; it does not perform a complete compatibility assessment for that particular PC. Use PC Health Check for the device-specific check.
Review the Windows 11 requirements
For a supported upgrade, the PC must meet these minimum requirements, as listed by Microsoft:
| Component | Minimum requirement |
|---|---|
| Processor | 1 GHz or faster, at least two cores, and included on Microsoft’s approved CPU list |
| Memory | 4 GB RAM |
| Storage | 64 GB or larger storage device |
| Firmware | UEFI firmware with Secure Boot capability |
| Security | TPM 2.0 |
| Graphics | DirectX 12 or later with WDDM 2.0 |
| Display | More than 9 inches diagonally, 720p or higher, with 8 bits per color channel |
Windows 11 Home and Windows 11 Pro for personal use also require an internet connection and a Microsoft account during initial device setup.
TPM 2.0 or Secure Boot may be disabled
A PC can contain compatible security hardware while Windows reports that it is unavailable. TPM may be disabled in UEFI firmware, and the machine may be configured for legacy BIOS mode instead of UEFI.
Recommended Free Tools
PC Health Check is the safer first step because it identifies the failed requirement. If it specifically reports TPM or Secure Boot, check the computer manufacturer’s instructions before changing firmware settings. Incorrect UEFI changes can make an existing Windows installation fail to boot, particularly when the system disk uses a legacy partition layout.

Enabling TPM 2.0 or Secure Boot does not guarantee that Windows 11 will appear immediately. Microsoft says eligibility information can take up to 24 hours to refresh after hardware changes; the offer is also subject to rollout timing and compatibility safeguards. See Microsoft’s guidance on refreshing eligibility after hardware changes.
Manually refresh the Windows 11 eligibility assessment
After changing hardware or firmware, Windows Update may still have an older eligibility result. You can manually run Microsoft’s Compatibility Appraiser.
Using Task Scheduler
- Right-click Start and select Search.
- Enter task scheduler.
- Select Task Scheduler under Best match.
- In the left pane, open Task Scheduler Library > Microsoft > Windows > Application Experience.
- Right-click Microsoft Compatibility Appraiser and select Run.
- Wait until its status shows Ready. Use Action > Refresh if the display does not update.
Using an administrator Command Prompt
- Right-click Start and select Search.
- Enter cmd.
- Choose Run as administrator next to Command Prompt.
- Select Yes if User Account Control appears.
- Run this exact command:
- schtasks.exe /Run /TN "\Microsoft\Windows\Application Experience\Microsoft Compatibility Appraiser"
- Press Enter and wait a few minutes.
- Return to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and select Check for updates.
This task path follows Microsoft’s documented Compatibility Appraiser instructions. If Task Scheduler reports that the user account does not have permission to run the task, use an administrator account or run the command from an administrator Command Prompt.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteLook for a compatibility hold
Microsoft can withhold Windows 11 because of an incompatible driver, hardware component, application, or Windows feature. This is intentional: the upgrade is paused when Microsoft knows the issue could cause an unexpected experience.
Windows Update may show a What needs your attention page. Common messages include:
- No action is needed: Windows Update has found a known issue and should offer the upgrade automatically after Microsoft resolves it.
- Incompatible privacy settings.
- Incompatible app.
- This PC doesn’t currently meet Windows 11 system requirements.
Fix an incompatible application
If the page offers Learn more or update instead, update the application through its software provider, return to the compatibility page, and select Refresh.
If you no longer need the application, select Uninstall. If Windows cannot remove it automatically, uninstall it through Settings > Apps > Apps & features, then return to the compatibility page and select Refresh.
A historical Microsoft compatibility hold affected Start-menu replacement utilities including StartIsBack++ and Stardock Start10. Microsoft’s documented remedy was to uninstall the utility or install a Windows 11-compatible release. After removing the hold, the offer could take up to 48 hours to appear if no other safeguard applied. See Microsoft’s notice about this historical compatibility hold.

Check whether the PC is managed by an organization
Microsoft’s consumer eligibility checks are intended for PCs that are not managed by an IT administrator. A work or school computer may be controlled by Windows Update policies, deployment rings, or an organization’s compatibility rules.
On a managed PC, contact the organization’s IT department rather than changing update policies or forcing the upgrade. The absence of the Windows 11 banner may be deliberate.
Check the S mode limitation
Windows 10 Pro, Education, and Enterprise in S mode cannot remain in S mode after upgrading to Windows 11 because S mode is not available in those Windows 11 editions. Windows 10 Home in S mode can upgrade to Windows 11 Home in S mode.
To leave S mode in Windows 10:
- Open Settings > Update & Security > Activation.
- Under Switch to Windows 10 Home or Switch to Windows 10 Pro, select Go to the Store.
- In Microsoft Store, open Switch out of S mode and select Get.
Do not select the link under Upgrade your edition of Windows. Microsoft says that route keeps the PC in S mode.
Why a compatible PC may still have no Windows 11 offer
Microsoft lists three broad explanations when Windows 11 is absent:
- The upgrade is not ready for that device yet.
- A known compatibility issue is blocking it.
- The device does not meet the hardware requirements.
Rollout timing considers more than the specification check. Microsoft also uses reliability metrics, device age, and other deployment data. Therefore, a PC Health Check result of “eligible” does not require Windows Update to offer the upgrade instantly.
After hardware changes, allow up to 24 hours for eligibility information to refresh. Running the Compatibility Appraiser can refresh the local assessment, but it cannot override a Microsoft compatibility hold or staged rollout.

Microsoft’s Windows 11 Installation Assistant can be used before Windows Update offers the upgrade, although Microsoft recommends waiting for the Windows Update offer first.
Its results generally lead to one of two paths:
- Install Windows 11, if the device passes the checks.
- Use the PC Health Check app to check compatibility, if the assistant cannot confirm eligibility.
If you run PC Health Check from Installation Assistant, select Refresh in the assistant afterward.

Use installation media for an in-place upgrade
Windows 11 installation media can upgrade an existing Windows installation when you run setup.exe from inside Windows. In Windows 11 Setup, the default choice is Keep personal files and apps.
Do not confuse this with booting from the USB drive. Booting from installation media starts a fresh-installation path and can erase applications, files, or the existing Windows installation. It can also leave an ineligible system unsupported if you have not first verified it with PC Health Check or Windows Update.

Windows 10 support status
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says normal free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes are no longer provided after that date. Eligible consumer devices enrolled in Extended Security Updates can receive security updates until October 12, 2027; this is separate from normal support and does not make hardware that fails Windows 11 requirements eligible. Recommended order of action
- Install all pending Windows 10 updates and restart.
- Run PC Health Check and record the specific failed requirement, if any.
- Resolve a disabled TPM, Secure Boot issue, incompatible app, or outdated driver only when the check identifies it.
- After firmware or hardware changes, wait up to 24 hours.
- Run the Compatibility Appraiser manually and check Windows Update again.
- Use Installation Assistant only after confirming compatibility.
- Use installation media from within Windows for an in-place upgrade, not by booting from it, unless you intentionally want a fresh installation.
FAQ
Why is Windows 11 not showing in Windows Update even though my PC is compatible?
Eligibility is only one factor. Windows Update may still be processing pending Windows 10 updates, waiting for its compatibility assessment to refresh, applying a known compatibility hold, or withholding the offer as part of Microsoft’s staged rollout.
How long does it take for Windows Update to recognize newly enabled TPM or Secure Boot?
Microsoft says eligibility information can take up to 24 hours to refresh after hardware changes. Running the Microsoft Compatibility Appraiser can manually refresh the assessment, but it cannot bypass a compatibility safeguard.
Does PC Health Check guarantee that Windows 11 will appear?
No. PC Health Check confirms whether the PC meets the requirements, but Microsoft may still delay the offer because of rollout timing, reliability data, device age, or a known compatibility issue.
Can I install Windows 11 without waiting for Windows Update?
Yes. Microsoft’s Installation Assistant can be used before Windows Update offers Windows 11, although waiting for the Windows Update offer is the recommended method. Check compatibility first.
Will leaving Windows 10 S mode fix the missing Windows 11 upgrade?
It may resolve the edition limitation for Windows 10 Pro, Education, or Enterprise in S mode, since those editions cannot stay in S mode after upgrading. Leave S mode through Settings > Update & Security > Activation and the Microsoft Store; do not use the Windows edition-upgrade link.
The Bottom Line
A missing Windows 11 entry usually requires diagnosis rather than a forced install. Update Windows 10, run PC Health Check, investigate any compatibility hold, refresh the Compatibility Appraiser after firmware changes, and allow Microsoft’s eligibility data time to update. If the PC passes and Windows Update still does not offer the upgrade, Installation Assistant is the supported next option.
