Union Pacific steam locomotives No. 844 and Big Boy No. 4014 are scheduled to appear together in Colorado on Nov. 21, 2026. The engines are set to lead a ticketed fundraising excursion from Greeley to Denver, then appear in a free public display at Denver Union Station. Union Pacific has not yet published ticket prices, display hours, or a detailed timetable.
When and where can you see No. 844 and Big Boy?
The announced date is Saturday, Nov. 21, 2026. Union Pacific’s current schedule lists a double-header excursion from Greeley to Denver, followed by a public display at Denver Union Station. The excursion benefits Make-A-Wish and includes a donation through Union Pacific’s Community Ties Giving Program. Union Pacific’s Oct. 5 announcement has the event details, while its steam schedule is the place to check for itinerary updates.
The railroad has not published a detailed departure timetable, intermediate stops, or the display’s hours in the checked event information. Those details may be announced closer to the tour.

Why is No. 844’s return notable?
Built in 1944, No. 844 hauled Union Pacific passenger trains including the Overland Limited, Los Angeles Limited, Portland Rose, and Challenger. After diesel locomotives took over passenger service, it worked freight service in Nebraska from 1957 to 1959. It escaped scrapping in 1960 and was retained for special service. Union Pacific describes it as the last steam locomotive built for the railroad and the only Class I North American steam locomotive never permanently retired from service. The railroad’s announcement provides this history.
This will be No. 844’s first public appearance since it traveled with No. 4014 in 2019 for events marking the 150th anniversary of the Golden Spike’s driving in Utah. The September announcement introduced Big Boy’s first holiday tour; Union Pacific’s Oct. 5 update added No. 844 to the Nov. 21 event. The original announcement described the Big Boy-only tour and Make-A-Wish context.

How close can you stand to photograph the train?
Union Pacific tells rail fans to stay at least 25 feet back from the tracks when viewing or photographing the locomotives. Do not stand on the tracks or ballast for a picture, and do not climb on railroad equipment. Trains can approach unexpectedly, and equipment may move even when it appears stationary. Follow any barriers, signs, and instructions from event staff. Union Pacific’s event announcement includes the 25-foot safety instruction.
