Some stars once thought to have formed from hypernova debris may instead reflect ordinary supernovae whose elements mixed unevenly before new stars formed. Two 2026 studies by University College London researchers also propose that a peculiar, metal-poor Milky Way star got its heavy elements from a neutron-star merger, alongside enrichment from an ordinary supernova. These are model-based explanations for particular stars—not evidence that hypernovae do not occur.

How can a star’s chemistry point to its origins?

A star inherits elements from the gas and dust that gathered to form it. Researchers can compare the star’s measured abundance pattern with the material expected from different kinds of stellar explosions or other enrichment events. If one model reproduces the pattern better than another, that can suggest which sources contributed to the star-forming gas.

The inference depends, however, on what material reached that gas. An explosion’s elements need not travel out in equal proportions in every direction, and a future star-forming cloud may capture only some of the debris. Its chemical record can therefore represent a partial sample of an event rather than the event’s average yield.

What did the UCL studies find?

In one analysis, the researchers reconsidered four stars previously judged to have formed from hypernova ejecta. After accounting for uneven mixing, they reported that ordinary supernovae were statistically more likely explanations for three of the four. The report does not give a test statistic, probability or effect size, so the result should be read as a comparison within the researchers’ model—not as a quantified claim about how common hypernovae are.

A second analysis examined a chemically unusual, metal-poor red giant in the Milky Way’s halo, including its abundance of heavy elements such as silver and uranium. The researchers proposed that its material was enriched by both a neutron-star merger and an ordinary supernova, rather than requiring a magnetized hypernova.

The report identifies the papers as Anmol Aggarwal et al., “An unexplored enrichment stochasticity and its implications for stellar abundance patterns” (2026; DOI 10.1093/mnras/stag610) and “Mixing stochasticity relinquishes evidence for magnetorotational hypernovae” (2026; DOI 10.1093/mnras/stag1512). The titles and publication details are reported by Phys.org, in an account supplied by UCL.

Why does uneven mixing matter?

If different elements are concentrated in different directions, the gas that forms a later star may receive an unrepresentative selection of an explosion’s material. A pattern that looks difficult to explain using an even, whole-explosion mixture might be reproducible if the cloud incorporated only particular layers or directions of ejecta.

That changes how strongly a distinctive abundance pattern identifies its source. In these cases, a pattern previously treated as evidence for hypernovae can instead be explained by ordinary supernovae under a model that allows incomplete, asymmetric mixing. The researchers’ account does not establish that this is the only possible explanation; it shows that the earlier interpretation is not required by the reported patterns.

How could a neutron-star merger fit the halo giant?

The proposed explanation combines two sources: a neutron-star merger to account for heavy elements, and an ordinary supernova as another contributor to the star’s chemical record. The giant’s unusual speed and retrograde orbit—movement opposite the usual direction of the Milky Way’s rotation—are clues the researchers use to suggest that it may have originated in a small dwarf galaxy.

That setting matters to the proposed timeline. The researchers argue that slower star formation in a small galaxy could leave enough time for a neutron-star merger to occur before the giant’s birth. In a faster-enrichment Milky Way scenario, the timing had been an objection to a merger explanation. The dwarf-galaxy origin is an interpretation of the star’s history, not a separately established birthplace.

What remains uncertain—and what the results do not show

  • The degree of mixing is unresolved. Co-author Ralph Schoenrich said that how well supernova material mixes before new stars form remains uncertain; the proposed account allows for some mixing, but not complete mixing.
  • The conclusions are case-specific. The report describes revised interpretations for four previously hypernova-associated stars and a proposed enrichment history for one unusual halo giant. It does not show that every unusual abundance pattern has the same origin.
  • Hypernovae are not ruled out. The studies challenge whether these stars require hypernova origins; they do not demonstrate that hypernovae are impossible.
  • The reported comparison is qualitative. The account gives the sample count and says three cases were statistically better explained by ordinary supernovae, but it does not report numerical statistical results or enough detail to quantify the competing models.

For the stars discussed, the key issue is not simply which explosion can produce certain elements. It is also whether the gas that formed each star could have received the right mixture of ejecta, and whether the proposed sources could have enriched that gas in time.
