Epic announced Unreal Engine 5.6 as available on June 3, 2025, with a stated goal of helping developers build high-fidelity, large-scale open worlds that run at 60 Hz on current-generation hardware. That is Epic’s target—not a guarantee that every UE 5.6 game or scene will sustain 60 frames per second with hardware ray tracing enabled.
What Epic announced about UE 5.6 and 60 fps
In its June 3, 2025 release announcement, Epic said one of its goals for UE 5.6 was to empower developers to build “super-high-fidelity, large-scale open worlds that run smoothly at 60 Hz on current-generation hardware.” The post also says hardware ray tracing (HWRT) system enhancements improve performance for Lumen Global Illumination and help eliminate key CPU bottlenecks.
Epic also describes device profiles optimized for a 60 Hz target on current-generation consoles and desktop platforms. Those profiles are a tool for developers to target performance; the announcement does not report that a particular game, graphics card, resolution, or settings combination achieved 60 fps.

No. The 60 Hz figure is Epic’s development goal for a particular class of content—high-fidelity, large-scale open worlds—on current-generation hardware. It is not a blanket performance guarantee for every project, scene, platform, or graphics setting.

The release post does not identify a test scene, GPU, resolution, quality settings, or measured before-and-after frame rate. Treat 60 Hz as an attributed target, not an independently verified benchmark. A game’s actual frame rate depends on its content and implementation as well as the hardware and settings it uses.
What hardware ray tracing means for Lumen
Lumen is Unreal Engine’s dynamic global illumination and reflections system. Epic’s documentation explains that Lumen uses hardware ray tracing when the video card, rendering interface, and operating system support it. That conditional support is one reason the 60 Hz goal cannot be applied universally to all PCs or configurations.

What determines whether a project can reach the target?
Epic’s announcement does not give a hardware recommendation or reproducible benchmark recipe. Developers evaluating a 60 Hz target need to assess their own project in its intended configuration, including:

- Target platform: A current-generation console and a desktop PC are not interchangeable performance baselines.
- Ray-tracing support: Hardware ray tracing depends on compatible video-card, rendering-interface, and operating-system support.
- Scene complexity: A large, detailed open world places different demands on the engine than a simpler scene.
- Resolution and quality settings: The announcement does not specify either, so its target should not be read as applying to every setting combination.
- Measured results: Test the actual project and distinguish a measured frame rate from a development target.
UE 5.6 is a broader engine release
Performance is only one part of Epic’s UE 5.6 announcement. The release also covers engine-first animation and rigging, MetaHuman authoring in the engine, workflow and asset-browser changes, procedural tools, streaming, and cinematic capture. Epic said developers could download the release through the Epic Games launcher and linked to GitHub and a Linux distribution in its announcement.
Epic’s May 2025 preview post used similar language about consistent 60 Hz frame rates for high-fidelity open worlds, but it warned that preview builds were under active development, not fully quality tested, and unstable. It advised developers to test copies of projects rather than convert working projects. That warning concerned the preview; it should not be mistaken for a statement that the final UE 5.6 release is itself a preview build. See Epic’s UE 5.6 Preview announcement.
