No. A SCART-to-HDMI converter and an HDMI-to-SCART converter move the signal in opposite directions, so they are not interchangeable. A SCART-to-HDMI converter takes the output of an older SCART source, such as a DVD player or set-top box, and feeds an HDMI input on a modern display. An HDMI-to-SCART converter does the reverse: it takes the HDMI output of a newer source and feeds a SCART input on an older TV or recorder. Choosing the right one depends on which socket the source has and which socket the display has.
The two signal paths
The two products are named by their direction of travel, and that direction is the only thing that decides whether a converter will work for your setup. The table below shows how each path is wired.

Both products sit between the same two types of socket, which is why they are easy to confuse. The difference lies in which end of the chain is analogue SCART and which end is digital HDMI.

Manufacturers are explicit on this point. DINIC, whose SCART-to-HDMI converter is sold through MAG GmbH, states on its product page: “The converter is designed exclusively for the SCART (analogue) to HDMI (digital) direction and is not suitable for the reverse signal path.” A converter built to accept a SCART signal and output HDMI does not accept HDMI and output SCART. Plugging it in backwards will not give you a picture, and it is not a workaround for a missing reverse-direction unit.

How to choose the right converter
- Identify the source output. Look at the back of the device you are connecting. A SCART socket is a wide, 21-pin SCART connector. An HDMI socket is the flat, narrower port that most modern players and consoles use.
- Identify the display input. Check which socket on the TV or recorder you will use. If the display has only HDMI inputs, you need a SCART-to-HDMI converter. If it has only a SCART input, you need an HDMI-to-SCART converter.
- Match the labels. Choose a product whose stated input is the source output and whose stated output is the display input. Read the manual, not only the product title.
- Check the rest of the specification. Power, regional video format and output resolution are covered below. These vary by model.
Connector shape alone does not prove that a converter goes in the direction you need. Two products can use the same kind of cable and still have their ports in opposite roles. The Schwaiger HDMI-to-SCART instructions specify an HDMI input and a SCART output, while the Transmedia SCART-to-HDMI manual specifies a SCART input and an HDMI output. Those two manuals describe the two directions and should be read against the model you buy.
Power, regional format and picture quality
Power supply
Conversion does not always run on the signal alone. The Schwaiger HDMI-to-SCART product described in its instructions includes a 5V power supply. AVSL describes USB 5V/1A power for its HDMI-to-SCART unit. These are specific models, so check the power requirement on the box or in the manual before you buy, and use the supply that came with the product.

PAL and NTSC
SCART devices are tied to regional television standards, and some converters let you choose between them. AVSL instructs users to select PAL for UK and EU content and NTSC for US content. Schwaiger specifies PAL or NTSC output for its reverse-direction model, which produces CVBS output at 480i or 576i. If the picture is rolling, tinted or unstable after you connect the unit, check this setting first, then confirm that it matches the source.

Upscaling and output resolution
Some SCART-to-HDMI converters change the analogue input into a digital HDMI output at a set resolution. Transmedia describes this as analogue SCART input converted to a 720p or 1080p HDMI output. That describes the output format. It does not mean the original picture contains high-definition detail. A standard-definition DVD played through the converter will still look like standard definition, just delivered at a higher output resolution. The DINIC product also lists several HDMI output resolutions, which you should compare against the display you own.

Connecting each direction
SCART source to HDMI display
- Connect the SCART cable from the source’s SCART output to the converter’s SCART input.
- Connect an HDMI cable from the converter’s HDMI output to an HDMI input on the TV.
- Connect the power supply if the model requires it.
- Set the PAL or NTSC option on the converter if it has one, matched to your region and source.
- Switch the TV to the HDMI input you used, and start the source device.
HDMI source to SCART display
- Connect an HDMI lead from the source’s HDMI output to the converter’s HDMI input. AVSL’s product page gives the instruction as: “Using a HDMI lead of the required length, connect one end to the input port of the converter and the other to the output port on your source device (max length 7m).”
- Connect a SCART cable from the converter’s SCART output to the SCART input on the TV or recorder.
- Connect the power supply if the model requires it.
- Set the PAL or NTSC option on the converter if it has one, matched to your region and source.
- Switch the TV to its SCART input and start the source device.
Troubleshooting
- No picture at all: Confirm the converter direction. A SCART-to-HDMI unit connected in reverse will not produce an image, and no setting will fix that.
- No picture, but the converter is correct: Check the power supply and whether the converter’s indicator shows that it is powered. Then confirm the TV is on the matching input.
- Rolling, tinted or unstable picture: Check the PAL or NTSC setting against your region and source.
- Picture looks soft or blocky on a large screen: This is usually the standard-definition source, not a fault. The converter changes the output format but does not add detail.
