Most Samsung phones do not have a universal setting that forces ordinary Wi‑Fi onto 2.4 GHz. The router or access point decides which band is offered. The dependable solution is to give the router’s 2.4 GHz radio its own network name (SSID), then connect your Samsung phone or smart-home device to that name. If your router already shows separate names such as Home-2G and Home-5G, simply choose the 2.4 GHz name in the phone’s Wi‑Fi list.
First check whether the bands already have separate names
- Open Settings on the Samsung phone.
- Tap Connections, then Wi‑Fi.
- Look for two network names that identify the bands, for example Home-2G and Home-5G.
- Tap the 2.4 GHz name and enter the Wi‑Fi password.
The labels vary by router. “2G” in a Wi‑Fi name normally means 2.4 GHz, not cellular 2G. If only one name appears, the router may be combining both radios with band steering (also called Smart Connect).
When there is only one Wi‑Fi name
Band selection must then be changed in the router or mesh system, not in a standard Samsung Wi‑Fi menu. Router interfaces differ by brand, ISP and firmware, so look for labels such as Wi‑Fi, Wireless, Radio, Band, SSID, Smart Connect or Band steering.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCreate separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz SSIDs
- Sign in to the router’s web console or open its management app.
- Open the wireless or Wi‑Fi settings.
- Turn off Smart Connect/band steering if it prevents independent names.
- Assign distinct names, such as Home-2.4 and Home-5, to the two radios. Keep the existing password unless the router requires otherwise.
- Save the changes and wait for the radios to restart.
- On the Samsung phone, forget the old combined network if necessary, then connect to the new 2.4 GHz SSID.
This arrangement is usually the easiest long-term setup for devices that require 2.4 GHz. It also lets you deliberately put a phone on 2.4 GHz while adding an appliance, without guessing which band the router selected.

Temporarily turn off 5 GHz
If the router cannot maintain two names, temporarily disable its 5 GHz radio, connect the phone to the remaining 2.4 GHz network, and complete device pairing. Re-enable 5 GHz afterward. Some mesh systems do not expose this control; in that case, use the system’s device-onboarding or “IoT” option if available, or contact the ISP or manufacturer.
Use 2.4 GHz when pairing SmartThings devices
Connect the Samsung phone and the appliance to the same local network during setup. If SmartThings says the network is incompatible:

- Confirm that the appliance supports the selected band. Samsung’s SmartThings troubleshooting specifically notes that robot vacuums and some TVs cannot connect to 5 GHz and support only 2.4 GHz.
- Check the router’s security mode as well as its frequency. SmartThings instructs users to verify both the GHz frequency (2.4 GHz versus 5 GHz) and the network security type.
- Move the router or controller closer if the 2.4 GHz signal is weak or unstable.
- Restart the appliance and the Samsung phone, then retry onboarding while the phone remains on the 2.4 GHz SSID.
Compatibility is model-specific. A Samsung-branded product is not automatically 2.4 GHz-only or dual-band; check the model’s specifications or setup documentation.

Switch the band on a Galaxy phone’s mobile hotspot
A Galaxy hotspot is different from joining a home router. On supported One UI releases, open Settings → Connections → Mobile Hotspot and Tethering → Mobile Hotspot, then look for Band or a similarly named control. Choose 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz and save.

Samsung’s official hotspot guidance says 2.4 GHz is compatible with more devices, while 5 GHz provides better performance. The exact labels and location can vary by Galaxy model, carrier and One UI version. If no band control appears, that model or carrier firmware may not expose one.
Connecting a Samsung TV
Wi‑Fi connection
If the TV cannot see or join the 5 GHz network, connect it to the router’s separate 2.4 GHz SSID. Some Samsung TVs support only 2.4 GHz, while others support both bands; the answer depends on the model.

Ethernet alternative
A Samsung TV with a LAN/Ethernet port can bypass Wi‑Fi band selection entirely. Connect an Ethernet cable from the TV to a LAN port on the router, then open the TV’s network settings and choose the wired connection. This is useful when the router cannot split SSIDs or when wireless pairing remains unreliable.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Why 2.4 GHz is often required
2.4 GHz generally reaches farther and passes through walls more effectively than 5 GHz, which helps small appliances placed away from the router. The trade-off is lower potential throughput and more congestion from neighboring networks and household equipment. 5 GHz can deliver higher performance at shorter range, but only if the device supports it and the signal remains strong.

Router and mesh choices that affect switching
| Capability | Why it matters | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Separate SSIDs | Lets you select 2.4 GHz directly on the Samsung phone. | The router can assign independent names and passwords to each radio. |
| Temporary 5 GHz disablement | Provides a fallback during setup of a 2.4 GHz-only appliance. | The app or web console exposes an on/off control for the 5 GHz radio. |
| Security-mode controls | An incompatible authentication mode can block pairing even on the correct band. | The device documentation’s supported WPA/Wi‑Fi security requirements. |
| Coverage | 2.4 GHz travels farther, but interference can still cause dropouts. | Router placement, distance and nearby networks at the device location. |
| Mesh behavior | Some mesh systems hide band controls or steer clients automatically. | Whether the mesh app supports separate IoT or band-specific SSIDs. |
| ISP restrictions | Provider gateways may lock advanced wireless settings. | Whether the ISP permits split bands or bridge mode; otherwise ask the ISP for assistance. |
You do not need to buy a new router merely to switch bands. Consider configurable dual-band Wi‑Fi hardware only if the current gateway cannot expose a 2.4 GHz network, cannot disable 5 GHz during onboarding, or repeatedly prevents compatible devices from connecting.
If the 2.4 GHz network still will not connect
- Confirm the phone is connected to the intended 2.4 GHz SSID, not the similarly named 5 GHz network.
- Check the appliance’s supported band and required security type.
- Keep the phone and appliance on the same local network; avoid guest Wi‑Fi if it isolates clients.
- Move the router, phone or appliance closer for setup.
- Restart the router, phone and appliance, then repeat pairing.
- If the router cannot split bands or provide a 2.4 GHz SSID, contact the ISP/router manufacturer or replace it with configurable dual-band hardware.
The Bottom Line
To use 2.4 GHz on a Samsung phone, select a router SSID dedicated to 2.4 GHz. If no such name exists, create one—or temporarily disable 5 GHz—in the router’s settings. For a Galaxy hotspot, use its Band control when available; for a Samsung TV with a LAN port, Ethernet avoids band selection altogether.
