An HP active stylus works with a pen digitizer built into a compatible display. The digitizer detects the pen and reports its position and whether the tip is touching the screen to Windows. When the pen and the computer both support them, those reports can also carry pressure and tilt, which apps can use to change how a stroke looks. For the HP Rechargeable MPP 2.0 Tilt Pen, HP specifies Microsoft Pen Protocol (MPP) 2.0 compatibility on selected HP laptop models. A touchscreen on its own does not tell you that a laptop supports this pen.
What Windows receives from the pen
Microsoft’s Windows hardware documentation defines the data fields a digitizer can send for pen and touch input. Pen-related fields include location, contact state, pressure, barrel-button state, and X and Y tilt. Windows pen-state documentation describes the sequence: while the pen is in range but not touching, Windows receives its location; when the tip touches the surface, Windows receives location, contact, and the corresponding pressure. Applications then draw ink or carry out other actions based on that data.
The table below separates the signals so you can see which ones depend on hardware and which ones depend on software.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minute| Signal | What it tells Windows | What it depends on |
|---|---|---|
| In-range location | Where the pen is above the screen, before the tip touches | A digitizer that tracks the pen while hovering |
| Tip contact | Whether the tip is on the surface, which starts and ends a stroke | The pen and digitizer reporting contact state |
| Pressure | How hard the tip presses at the contact point | Pen and digitizer support for pressure, plus an app that uses it |
| X/Y tilt | The pen’s angle relative to the surface | Pen and digitizer support for tilt, plus an app that uses it |
| Barrel button | Whether a button on the pen body is pressed | Pen and digitizer reporting the button; not stated for this HP pen in HP’s specifications |
The safe way to describe the process is this: the pen and a compatible digitizer produce input, and Windows interprets it as pen data. The public documentation does not describe the low-level electrical signaling inside HP’s MPP 2.0 pen, so this article does not describe it either.

Pressure and tilt
Pressure is a measured force. Microsoft’s digitizer documentation states it directly: “Pressure is a measurement of the force that the finger or pen exerts against the digitizer surface.” An app can make a stroke wider or narrower as pressure increases, but only if the hardware reports pressure and the app is written to read it.
Tilt is a different measurement. It describes the pen’s angle, and apps can use it for effects such as shading with the side of a pen. Microsoft’s consumer guidance for pens describes pressure sensitivity and tilt recognition as features that make writing and drawing more expressive, and it does not promise that every pen, laptop, driver, or app supports them. Check each feature separately.

- Pressure response depends on the pen, the display’s digitizer, and the app.
- Tilt response depends on the same three, and some apps ignore it entirely.
- HP’s product page does not state how many pressure levels the Rechargeable MPP 2.0 Tilt Pen provides, so no level count is given here.
What MPP 2.0 means for this pen
Microsoft Pen Protocol is the standard that defines how a pen and a Windows digitizer communicate. HP’s product specifications for the Rechargeable MPP 2.0 Tilt Pen list MPP 2.0 compatibility and limit that compatibility to selected HP laptop models. The specifications page does not list every compatible laptop, so the model check described below is required.
HP describes MPP 2.0 as offering less delay, smoother color transition, and enhanced response time. These are product-page claims. HP’s specifications page does not give a measured latency figure, and this article does not supply one.

Pairing the pen with a laptop
HP’s setup guide for the HP Tilt Pen documents Bluetooth pairing for that pen. Pairing sets up the pen’s connection to the computer, and the guide also covers Windows pen, handwriting, and shortcut settings. Follow the guide for your exact pen, because steps for other HP pens can differ.
- Charge the pen by connecting its USB-C port to a power source.
- Press and hold the pen’s top button for three seconds to enter Bluetooth pairing mode.
- In Windows, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices, select Add device, and choose HP Tilt Pen.
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Pen & Windows Ink to review pen behavior and shortcut options.
A successful pairing confirms that the pen and computer can connect. It does not confirm that the display’s digitizer accepts MPP 2.0 pen input. If the pen pairs but ink does not appear where you write, the most likely cause is that the laptop model is outside HP’s list of MPP 2.0 systems. Check the model before troubleshooting drivers.

Confirming compatibility before you buy
Compatibility is a property of the exact computer, not of the brand. Use this checklist:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Find the laptop’s full model number in Windows through Settings > System > About, or on the label on the device.
- Check HP’s compatibility information for that model, and confirm it lists MPP 2.0 support for the pen.
- Confirm the target app supports the feature you need. Pressure and tilt are the features most likely to vary between apps.
- Do not assume that a touchscreen laptop from HP will accept any HP pen.
Battery life and what is in the box
HP’s specifications page for the Rechargeable MPP 2.0 Tilt Pen lists the following:
- Battery: rechargeable lithium-ion.
- Battery life: up to 30 days at two hours of use per day. HP states this figure for this product page, not as a general estimate for all HP styluses. HP also says actual battery life varies with use and environmental conditions, and that it decreases over time.
- Included: two additional tips and a USB-C cable.
- Product identifiers: black model 3J122AA and silver model 3J123AA.
Because the cable is included, you do not need a separate one to charge the pen. The page confirms two extra tips but does not list a separate replacement-tip part number, so check the tip listing against your exact pen model before ordering spares.
