“Earrape mic” is internet slang for a microphone signal that is very loud, harsh, and heavily distorted. It is not a type of microphone and no microphone has an “earrape” mode. The effect comes from one of two places: distortion added deliberately after the voice is recorded, or clipping that happens by accident when a microphone or its input is overloaded. The two need different fixes, so this guide separates them before showing how to create the effect in a controlled way.
What “earrape” means for a microphone
A microphone only converts sound pressure into an electrical signal. It does not make a voice louder or harsher on its own. Any “earrape” quality is added later, either in an audio editor or in a live processing chain, or it is introduced by a signal that exceeds what the microphone or recording path can handle. A 2017 Microsoft Q&A thread (December 22, 2017) makes the same distinction between capture and editing, but that is community advice rather than official Microsoft documentation.
Two different things people call earrape
Searches such as “How to Earrape Mic? (Discord, Zoom)” usually mean one of two things. Either the person wants to create the effect on purpose, or their microphone is distorting and they want it to stop. The causes are different enough that it helps to identify which one you have.

Deliberate distortion added after recording
This is the creative effect. A clean voice is recorded at a normal level, then a distortion or clipping effect is applied in software. Because the clean take is preserved, the effect can be changed, reduced, or removed at any time.

Capsule overload at the microphone
RØDE’s guide “How to Reduce Audio Distortion During Recording” (May 5, 2026) explains that a source can overwhelm the microphone capsule once it exceeds the capsule’s maximum sound-pressure level. Lowering recording gain does not reliably fix this, because the distortion occurs before the signal reaches the recorder. Once captured this way, the distortion is part of the recording.
Clipping at the input or in the recording path
Excessive input gain, or sudden peaks from a loud source, can push the signal past the maximum the interface or application can record. Focusrite’s clipping and gain-staging support pages advise turning down channel gain to prevent clipping at the input. This is also permanent in the recording.

Creating the effect on a recorded clip
This is the most controllable way to make the effect, and it does not require overloading any hardware. The steps below are general practice based on the manufacturer guidance above. No specific software chain or preset is established as correct, so treat the settings as starting points you tune by ear.
- Record a voice track at a normal level. Keep the input meter well below the top of its scale, consistent with Focusrite’s advice to reduce channel gain before the signal clips.
- Import the clip into any sound editor that offers a distortion or clipping effect.
- Apply the effect and adjust its amount while listening at a conservative playback volume, not at full output.
- Export a copy and keep the untouched original so you can compare or revert.
- Check the exported file on a second device at low volume before you share it.
Using the effect in live voice chat
- Check whether the application or audio software you use has an effect chain. Only use a built-in effect if one is offered.
- Test with a short private recording or a call with one person before using it in a group.
- Keep both input and output levels under control. Use the application’s level meters and lower the output if the audio becomes harsh.
- Do not deliberately overload the microphone capsule as a substitute for an effect. That distortion cannot be removed later and can damage your listeners’ experience without giving you control.
Troubleshooting unintended distortion
If you did not mean to create the effect, identify the symptom first.

Distortion on loud sounds or when speaking close to the mic
This points to capsule overload. RØDE’s guidance is to increase distance from the source, reduce the source level, use attenuation if the microphone offers it, and monitor the result. Lowering recording gain alone may not solve it. Shure’s MV7 User Guide also covers distortion and gain troubleshooting for that specific model; its advice applies to that model rather than to microphones in general.
Waveform clipping in the interface or application
If the signal clips at the input, reduce the channel gain on your interface or in the application. This is the fix Focusrite describes for input clipping.

Harsh bursts on “p” and “b” sounds
Plosive consonants can create sudden bursts that clip. Riverside’s troubleshooting guide, which carries no publication date in the copy reviewed, recommends a pop filter or greater distance from the microphone. A pop filter reduces plosive bursts but does not create the effect, and it does not fix general overload.
Feedback squeal
Feedback is a positive gain loop between a microphone’s input and a speaker’s output. Universal Audio’s “How to Avoid Microphone Feedback” advises starting at a low volume and raising gain gradually, so you can find the point where the loop begins before it becomes painful to hear.

Sharing the effect responsibly
- Tell listeners before sending a distorted clip, especially in a group call or a shared channel where they cannot control the volume.
- Do not start a live stream at a level you have not checked on a second device.
- No numeric safe-listening limit specific to this effect was established in the guidance reviewed. Keep playback volume conservative and stop if the sound is uncomfortable.
