To get more useful results from ChatGPT, tell it what you are trying to do, provide the context that matters, specify the form of the answer you want, and refine the response with follow-up questions. ChatGPT can help with tasks such as writing, studying, planning, coding, math, and analyzing files or images, but its available tools vary by account and it can make mistakes. Check important answers before relying on them.
What is ChatGPT?
ChatGPT is an AI assistant for everyday tasks. You can use it to brainstorm, draft or revise writing, study a subject, plan an activity, work through math or coding questions, and—where available—analyze images and files. OpenAI describes these and other capabilities in its ChatGPT FAQ.
It responds to the instructions and information you provide, but a fluent answer is not necessarily a correct one. Treat it as a tool for generating and working through ideas, not as an authority that replaces your judgment.

How do you start a useful chat?
Open ChatGPT, type a request in the message box, and send it. You can then continue in the same chat: ChatGPT can use the conversation’s context when answering follow-up questions. A short, specific prompt is often a better starting point than a broad request such as “Tell me about project management.”

Include the details that shape the answer
When they matter, state your goal, audience, relevant background, constraints, and desired output. For example:
I need to explain our new return policy to customers who have not read the full terms. Draft a friendly email under 180 words. Do not promise refunds outside the policy. End with a short list of the details customers should check before contacting support.
This gives ChatGPT a task, audience, tone, length, and boundary. For a study question, you might instead say what you already understand and ask for an explanation at your level, followed by a practice question.
Improve the response with follow-ups
If the first answer misses the mark, say what to change rather than starting over. Ask it to shorten the draft, explain a step, use a different tone, compare alternatives, or identify assumptions. You can also correct a mistaken premise or add a missing constraint. Review the revision against your original goal; follow-up prompts help steer the conversation but do not guarantee accuracy.

What can you ask ChatGPT to do?
Begin with a real task and choose a response that will help you take the next step. These examples are starting points, not guarantees that a particular tool or capability is available on every account.
- Writing: “Turn these notes into a clear project update for a nontechnical audience. Keep the facts unchanged and flag anything that is unclear.”
- Studying: “Explain the difference between correlation and causation in plain language, then give me three questions to test my understanding.”
- Planning: “Help me plan a two-day visit. Ask me about budget, interests, and mobility needs before suggesting an itinerary.”
- Coding: “Explain what this function does, point out possible edge cases, and suggest a small test for each one.”
- Working with material: If file or image analysis is available, provide the relevant file or image and say what you want to learn from it—for example, a summary, explanation, or comparison. Check the result against the original material.
When should you use search, files, voice, or data analysis?
ChatGPT’s FAQ describes tools including web search, file analysis, voice, image capabilities, and data analysis. They can be useful when a task needs current information, input beyond text, or work on supplied material. Access and limits vary by plan, model, region, platform, and workspace, and can change. Check the tools visible in your ChatGPT account and its current plan details rather than assuming a feature or quota applies to everyone. OpenAI’s FAQ outlines the available capabilities and account-dependent access.

- Web search: Consider it for information that may have changed, such as current rules, schedules, or product details. Read the cited sources and confirm that they support the answer.
- File or image analysis: Use it when you want help interpreting material you provide. Make the request specific, and verify important conclusions against the source file or image.
- Voice: Use it when speaking is more convenient than typing, if Voice is available in your account and setup. OpenAI’s Voice guidance describes the feature and notes that access can vary.
- Data analysis: If the tool is available, it may help you examine data you provide. Check that the data and assumptions are appropriate before acting on the result.
How should you check ChatGPT’s answers?
OpenAI warns in its Voice guidance that “ChatGPT can make mistakes.” That applies to answers generally, not only spoken conversations. Be especially careful when a response could affect health, money, safety, legal obligations, or an important decision.
- Check claims against reliable sources, especially when facts depend on date, time, location, or changing rules.
- For calculations, inspect the inputs and method; use an independent calculation when the result matters.
- For summaries of files or images, compare key details with the original material.
- Ask ChatGPT to identify assumptions or uncertainty, but do not treat its self-assessment as independent verification.
What does Memory remember, and how do you manage it?
When Memory is enabled, ChatGPT may use relevant preferences or details from chats and other available sources to personalize future conversations. Memory is not a complete transcript and does not retain every detail. OpenAI’s Memory guidance explains that you can review, correct, or delete remembered information where those controls are available.
Best Value
Look in your account’s Personalization settings for Memory controls; exact options can depend on your account or workspace. Turning Memory off does not delete past chats, and deleting a chat alone may not delete a separately saved memory. If you want to remove information, check both the chat history and the Memory controls.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What is Temporary Chat, and how do data controls work?
OpenAI says Temporary Chats do not appear in chat history, do not create or update memories, and are not used to improve models while they remain temporary. Choose Temporary Chat when you want a conversation with those effects, and check the behavior described in OpenAI’s FAQ before sharing sensitive information.
For other privacy choices, review Data Controls and Personalization in your own account. Available settings can differ for personal accounts and managed workspaces. OpenAI explains consumer-service data handling in its data controls guidance; do not assume that every account has identical controls or defaults.
How should you choose an account or plan?
There is no single plan choice that suits every user. Compare the details shown in your own account according to what you need: access to specific tasks and tools, usage limits, whether you are using a personal or managed workspace, and availability on your platform and in your region. OpenAI says plan features and limits can vary and change, so consult the current in-product plan information and official FAQ rather than relying on an old list or a universal feature claim.
