Starting in fall 2026–27, the University of Oregon is replacing its traditional resident assistant (RA) staffing model with two peer-student roles: Community Assistants (CAs), focused on community-building, and Community Safety Assistants (CSAs), focused on safety and after-hours support. The change ends the standard RA model for new staffing, but it does not mean every current RA is automatically losing a job: a defined group of continuing RAs may transition into limited-duration Community Coordinator positions under the university’s bargaining agreement.
What is changing, and when?
University Housing says the new roles take effect in fall term of the 2026–27 academic year. The university describes the redesign as an evolution from the traditional RA model intended to deepen student support, belonging, connection, and access to timely care and guidance. The new roles separate work that was previously bundled into live-in peer staff jobs.
UO calls Community Assistants “Community Builders” in its bargaining agreement and position description. CAs concentrate on community connection and referrals; CSAs concentrate on safety, support, and response to concerns outside regular hours.
What will the new roles do?
Community Assistants: connection and community-building
UO estimates CAs will work an average of 12–14 hours per week. Duties include welcoming and connecting residents, hosting community events, checking in with students, helping them find campus resources, supporting their transition to campus living, and mediating minor-to-moderate roommate conflicts. The published CA appointment runs from September 14, 2026, through June 12, 2027.

Community Safety Assistants: safety and after-hours response
UO estimates CSAs will work an average of 14–18 hours per week. The bargaining agreement lists evening and late-night work, regular rounds, incident reporting, low-level emergency response and crisis intervention, and enforcement of community standards among the role’s responsibilities. CSAs are also expected to connect students with professional staff.
What happens to current UO RAs?
The bargaining agreement preserves the existing RA title, role, and general responsibilities for in-service RAs during 2025–26. From 2026–27, a qualifying group of those RAs has a route into limited-duration Community Coordinator positions. To qualify under the agreement, an RA must have served in 2024–25, continued through 2025–26 without a service break, and meet UO’s selection, hiring, and satisfactory-evaluation criteria. The agreement does not guarantee a coordinator job to every current RA.

Community Coordinators are elevated leadership positions that support live-in professional staff and residence-life committees. Their contract terms provide the 2025–26 RA contract rate and schedule, represented as 100% credit to the RESW room-and-meal-plan rate.

UO defines the RESW rate as the most commonly available standard double room with a standard meal plan and updates it annually. Its CA FAQ says CAs receive furnished standard double rooms with roommates; building placement depends on departmental and operational needs, and room amenities may differ. The listed CA credit and share are UO’s 2026–27 calculations, not hourly wages.

Is the RA position being cut to save money?
UO’s public explanation emphasizes improving residential support, belonging, connection, and timely care. A proposed 2026–27 housing-rate document lists RA restructuring adjustments among wage cost drivers, alongside personnel, food, utilities, maintenance, and capital costs. That shows the redesign is part of housing budget planning; it does not establish that cost-cutting caused the change. The reviewed UO materials do not publish a comparison of resident safety, belonging, or satisfaction under the old and new models.

UO’s RESW FAQ says the 2026–27 CA application is open until filled, and the Student Leadership page says applications are being accepted. Availability can change. The same FAQ says the CA role is not hourly: compensation is structured as a 65% housing and meal-plan credit, with the student responsible for the remaining 35%.
