South Miami police say Dylan Hugh Long placed a camera in his roommate’s bedroom after the roommate did not answer his text messages. The roommate reportedly found it on September 12, 2026, after noticing a blue light inside a nightstand. Long has been charged, but he denies wrongdoing through his attorney; the allegations have not been established at trial.
What happened at the South Miami residence?
Local reports describe an off-campus residence in South Miami, not a University of Miami dorm. The roommate reportedly noticed a blue light coming from the middle compartment of a bedroom nightstand on September 12 and found a camera there. WSVN and Local 10 describe those details as coming from the arrest report. WSVN’s report and Local 10’s report recount the discovery.
According to WSVN’s account of the arrest report, the roommate accessed files on the device. Police reportedly described about 49 video files, some corrupted, including multiple recordings of the roommate in his bedroom without his knowledge or consent. Other videos allegedly showed Long testing the device. These are reported descriptions of evidence, not findings of guilt.

News accounts say Long initially denied involvement and later admitted to placing the device in the room. Police reportedly attributed to him the explanation that he wanted to find out whether his roommate was reading his texts. That is a reported explanation, not an independently established motive.

NBC 6’s account of released body-camera video also reports that Long described ongoing arguments with his roommate and said the act was a drunken decision. Its search-result text includes further statements attributed to Long, but the page could not be accessed for verification; those exact words should therefore be treated cautiously rather than as a confirmed transcript. NBC 6’s report is the source of that account.
What charges and court developments have been reported?
WSVN reported that Long was charged with video voyeurism and burglary of an unoccupied structure. It also reported that a judge found probable cause and set bond at $3,500. An arrest, charge, and probable-cause finding are procedural steps; none is a conviction.

NBC 6’s search-result text says a judge ordered Long to stay away from the roommate and that Long entered a written not-guilty plea after bonding out. Because the NBC page was inaccessible and the court docket was not available in the reporting reviewed, those later developments are less directly verifiable than the details reported by WSVN and The Miami Hurricane. The case’s later status was not established in the accessible accounts as of October 3, 2026.

What does Long’s attorney say?
Long’s attorney, Matt Shafran, said Long “maintains his innocence and looks forward to addressing these allegations through the appropriate legal process.” Shafran also disputed the characterization of the incident, saying: “What occurred was not voyeuristic in nature, and we believe this situation has been significantly misunderstood.” The statements were reported by The Miami Hurricane.
