The number to watch when UnitedHealth Group reports third-quarter results is its medical care ratio (MCR): medical costs divided by premium revenue. A lower ratio can mean medical costs consumed a smaller share of premium revenue, but it is not a verdict on earnings by itself.
UnitedHealth scheduled the release for before the market opens on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, followed by an investor call at 8:00 a.m. ET. As of October 3, the company had not released its Q3 results.
What does the medical care ratio tell investors?
The MCR compares medical costs with premium revenue. Because it is a ratio, it offers a way to assess how much of the premium revenue went to medical care, rather than looking at medical spending or revenue alone. A lower reading can indicate that medical costs took a smaller share of premium revenue.

That does not make a lower number automatically good or a higher number automatically bad. The ratio can move for several reasons, and business mix, pricing and other factors affect how it translates into overall results.

How should Q3’s MCR be judged?
UnitedHealth’s July 16, 2026 full-year outlook was an MCR of 88.1% ± 25 basis points. That is the company’s full-year outlook, not a forecast for Q3 alone. Compare the Q3 reported ratio with that outlook, then look for management’s explanation of what drove the result and whether the full-year outlook changed.
UnitedHealth reported $112.0 billion in Q2 2026 revenue and adjusted earnings per share of $6.38. In that same release, it raised its full-year adjusted EPS outlook to $19.50–$20.00 per share. Those figures provide recent context, but they do not establish what Q3 results will be.

What can move the ratio?
UnitedHealth’s SEC-filed materials identify several influences on MCR:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Prior-period reserve development.
- Affordability and medical-cost-management initiatives.
- Pricing trends.
- Medical-cost trends, which the filing said remained above historical levels.
These factors matter because a ratio change does not, on its own, reveal whether costs, pricing, reserve adjustments or a combination of them drove the movement. Segment results also matter: UnitedHealth says segment measures help investors assess business mix and pricing trends, which the consolidated MCR cannot show by itself.

When and where will UnitedHealth report?
The company scheduled its Q3 2026 results for before market open on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, with an investor call at 8:00 a.m. ET. The reported MCR, segment results and any revised full-year outlook will only be known once the company releases its results.
In its Q2 release, CEO Stephen Hemsley said: “Our results and outlook reflect the continuing progress in our work to simplify how we operate, improve both affordability and the healthcare experience for patients and care providers, and apply modern technology to create real improvement for people.” The Q3 report and call should provide the next update on results and outlook.
