The United Explorer Card can be worth its ongoing $150 annual fee if you regularly fly United and use benefits such as a free checked bag or the two United Club passes. Chase lists a $0 annual fee for the first year, then $150; the first-year offer and pricing can change, so check the live terms before applying. Count only benefits you would actually use—not the advertised maximum value of credits—as savings.

Is the United Explorer Card worth its annual fee?
Compare the ongoing $150 fee with the value of benefits you would otherwise pay for and can actually qualify to use. For a United flyer who checks bags, the bag benefit may be the clearest source of savings. Two lounge visits can also matter to someone who would pay for airport access, while credits help only when their purchase and enrollment rules match spending already in your plans.

That maximum assumes both travelers would otherwise pay the qualifying bag fee on both legs; it is not a cash credit, and eligibility rules apply. What checked-bag benefit does the card include?
The primary cardmember and one companion traveling on the same reservation can each receive a first standard checked bag free on qualifying United- and United Express-operated flights. Chase’s detailed terms say: “The primary Cardmember and one traveling companion on the same reservation are each eligible to receive their first standard checked bag free; authorized users are only eligible if they are on the same reservation as the primary Cardmember.”
- The primary cardmember’s MileagePlus number must be attached to the reservation.
- Except for flights completed within 90 days after the account opens, the ticket must be purchased from United using the card.
- The flight must be operated by United or United Express. Partner-operated codeshares are excluded.
- The benefit covers the first standard bag only. Overweight, oversized, and additional bags may still incur charges.
Check the current Chase card terms before booking, particularly if your itinerary includes a partner airline.
How do the United Club passes work?
The card provides two one-time United Club passes after account opening and again every 12 months while the account remains open. They provide occasional access, not an unlimited United Club membership. Each pass is subject to United Club access rules, is non-transferable, has no cash value, and expires as indicated on the pass. Their practical value depends on whether you can use them during a trip and would otherwise pay for lounge access.
How many miles do purchases earn?
- 3 miles per dollar: eligible United purchases.
- 2 miles per dollar: dining and hotel stays booked directly with the hotel.
- 1 mile per dollar: other eligible purchases.
Chase advertises up to 9 total miles per dollar on eligible United flights by combining 3 miles per dollar from the card with 6 miles per dollar in MileagePlus member flight earnings. The 9x headline is not the card’s earning rate alone. Basic Economy or other base-option tickets may earn differently; see the United Explorer Card Rewards Program Agreement, dated January 9, 2026, for rewards rules.

What other benefits and credits are available?
Chase lists additional benefits including up to $120 every four years toward Global Entry, TSA PreCheck, or NEXUS application fees, plus credits tied to certain hotel, rideshare, rental-car, JSX, and Instacart purchases. Some require enrollment, a qualifying booking or purchase, or use within a stated period; some have annual limits or dated terms. Confirm the current requirements on the card benefits page before counting a credit toward the fee.
Chase also lists priority boarding and award-pricing benefits. Their value depends on the itinerary and the terms in effect when you use them.
What travel and purchase protections are included?
Chase lists baggage-delay, lost-luggage, trip-delay, trip-cancellation/interruption, travel-accident, auto-rental, purchase-protection, and extended-warranty benefits. Coverage is governed by specific terms, limits, and exclusions; the list is not a guarantee that a particular claim will be covered. Chase directs cardmembers to the logged-in Card Benefits area for current benefit details.
Quick Recap

- Be cautious if you rarely fly United, travel without checked bags, or would need to change your spending just to use credits.
- Pay the balance in full if you choose a rewards card. Interest can outweigh rewards; the displayed variable APR is 19.74%–28.24%, depending on creditworthiness, and can change.
