The original Unihertz Tank makes the most sense for car camping, outdoor work, or trips where a huge battery reserve and a built-in area light matter more than pack weight. TechRadar’s 2023 review lists a 22,000 mAh battery, a rear camping lamp rated up to 1,200 lumens, and a weight of 560 g. That last figure is the catch: it is a very heavy phone to carry on a hike. It is also a 4G device, not a current-generation 5G option.
Is the original Unihertz Tank a good phone for hiking or camping?
It can be a useful outdoor phone if you are willing to carry its bulk for battery capacity and illumination. The balance favors car camping, base camps, work sites, and short outings more than long hikes where every gram counts. This is the original Tank reviewed by TechRadar in 2023—not the later Tank 2 Pro, Tank 3 Pro, or Tank 4 Pro.
TechRadar reviewer Mark Pickavance summarized the trade-off this way: “Another rugged design with vast battery capacity, but even heavier than the V Max.” The 560 g phone is also 175.6 × 85.30 × 23.9 mm, so it takes up substantial space as well as adding weight.

A very large battery, with runtime caveats
TechRadar lists a 22,000 mAh battery and estimates typical use at six to ten days. It also says the rear lamp can stay lit for six hours on a charge and that the included 66 W charger can refill the phone in around 2.5 hours. These are review estimates, not guaranteed field runtimes. Cold, weak cellular signal, screen use, frequent lamp use, and battery age can all affect how long the phone lasts outdoors.
#1 Best Overall
- Carrier Compatibility: The Unihertz Tank is compatible with T-Mobile and MVNOs (Mobile Virtual Network Operators) on T-Mobile. For Verizon compatibility, users are directed to check forums, Facebook, or contact customer support for guidance on setting up the device on the Verizon network.
- Rugged Design: The Unihertz Tank is designed for outdoor use, featuring a rugged design that can withstand harsh conditions. This includes a durable construction that meets certain standards for water resistance, dust resistance, and durability against drops.
- Battery Life: The smartphone boasts the largest battery, providing an impressive 2380 hours of standby time and 150 hours of calling time. This is particularly beneficial for users who require extended battery life in outdoor or remote environments.
- Camera Capabilities: The Unihertz Tank is equipped with a 108MP camera, indicating high-resolution imaging capabilities. This allows users to capture detailed and high-quality photos and videos.
- Charging Technology: The device supports 66W fast charging, allowing users to quickly charge the smartphone for minimal downtime. The mention of "Juice up Your Tank in No Time" suggests a rapid charging experience.
The capacity gives the Tank an unusually large reserve compared with ordinary phones, but it does not establish how many days it will last on a particular trip. Plan around your own usage and access to charging rather than treating the review estimate as a promise.
A built-in area light
The rear camping lamp is rated at up to 1,200 lumens in TechRadar’s review. Pickavance called it one of the design’s best features, describing it as “the blinding LED light on the back.” TechRadar found it useful for lighting a larger area and says it is accessed through the Toolbox app. The 1,200-lumen figure is a reported rating, not an independently measured brightness result.

Ruggedness ratings are not a damage guarantee
TechRadar’s specification list gives the reviewed Tank IP68, IP69K, and MIL-STD-810H ratings. These are published ratings, not proof that any individual phone will survive every fall, water exposure, or outdoor condition. TechRadar warns against taking the phone deeper than 1.5 m; do not treat that as permission for deeper immersion or assume the phone is safe in all water conditions.

Navigation and connectivity are different things
Unihertz’s November 28, 2024 case study says the Tank supports GPS, GLONASS, BeiDou, and Galileo. That is a manufacturer-published GNSS claim; the available evidence does not establish the phone’s GPS accuracy or trail performance. Satellite positioning can help determine location, but it does not provide cellular service.
Recommended Free Tools
TechRadar reviewed a 4G model, not a 5G phone. Whether it can connect depends on the carrier’s supported bands, the exact device variant, local network coverage, and geography. Neither GNSS support nor a large battery guarantees reception on a remote trail. Download offline maps before leaving coverage, and do not rely on the phone as a replacement for a dedicated satellite messenger or emergency communicator.
Who should consider carrying it?
- Consider it for car camping or a base camp if the built-in area lamp and large battery reserve are worth carrying a 560 g phone.
- Consider it for outdoor work if its size and weight are acceptable and your network, software, and durability requirements match this specific model.
- Look elsewhere for long hikes if keeping your pack light is a priority; the phone’s mass is a substantial disadvantage before adding a case, cable, or other accessories.
- Look for a current-generation option if you specifically want 5G or need verified current carrier compatibility. The review’s 2023 specifications do not answer those present-day questions.
How it compares with the Doogee V Max
In its 2023 comparison, TechRadar said the Doogee V Max had the same 22,000 mAh battery capacity and 5G, but lacked a Tank-style camping lamp. The review described the V Max as a few grams lighter, with a better SoC and a higher cost at that time. Those are historical review comparisons, not a current price or model-by-model buying verdict. Check the exact versions, current prices, carrier bands, and availability before choosing between them. The available sources do not establish which phone has better GPS accuracy or trail performance.
Availability and buying checks
Unihertz’s catalog captured on October 5, 2026 shows later Tank-series devices and selected accessories, but does not establish that the original Tank is still in stock. Before buying, confirm that a listing is for the original Tank rather than a Tank 2 Pro, Tank 3 Pro, or Tank 4 Pro, and check the seller, exact variant, return terms, and network compatibility. Do not assume an old review’s purchase link reflects current stock or support.
