Unicode 17.0 is no longer upcoming: the Unicode Consortium announced it on September 9, 2025. The final release added eight emoji characters. Its additions include a distorted face, fight cloud, hairy creature, trombone, treasure chest, orca, landslide and a ballet-dancer sequence. Apple Core appeared in an earlier preview but was postponed to Unicode 18.0, so it is not part of Unicode 17.0.
What Unicode 17.0 actually added
The Unicode Consortium’s final release announcement reports eight new emoji characters. For exact names, sequences and variants, the authoritative reference is Unicode’s versioned Emoji Recently Added, v17.0 chart.
| Final v17.0 addition | What to know |
|---|---|
| Distorted face | New emoji character in the final repertoire. |
| Fight cloud | New emoji character in the final repertoire. |
| Hairy creature | New emoji character in the final repertoire. |
| Trombone | New emoji character in the final repertoire. |
| Treasure chest | New emoji character in the final repertoire. |
| Orca | New emoji character in the final repertoire. |
| Landslide | New emoji character in the final repertoire. |
| Ballet dancer | Added as an emoji sequence; use the v17.0 chart for its exact sequence and any recorded variants. |
The same chart also documents people-with-bunny-ears entries and related sequences or variants. Those chart rows should not be mistaken for eight additional newly encoded emoji characters.
Why the early Apple Core preview changed
A July 2025 preview listed nine prospective items: Trombone, Treasure Chest, Distorted Face, Hairy Creature, Fight Cloud, Apple Core, Orca, Ballet Dancer and Landslide. The preview warned that the list required final approval.

“Unicode 17.0 launched” does not mean every keyboard changed
Unicode standardization and product rollout are separate events. Unicode defines encoded characters, sequences, properties and interoperability guidance so text can be represented across systems. A phone, operating system, browser, messaging service or app must still implement the new characters and provide its own artwork.

Unicode’s v17.0 chart notes that platform images may be development versions. The release materials do not establish a single availability date for each operating system or app. Consequently, publication of the standard does not prove that a particular device displayed every new emoji immediately.
What to check when an emoji is missing
- Confirm that the device or app supports Unicode 17.0.
- Install the platform’s current software and emoji-font updates, if offered.
- Test the character in an app that supports the relevant Unicode version; unsupported systems may show a blank box or replacement symbol.
- Use Unicode’s v17.0 chart to distinguish a base character from a sequence or variant.
Keeping the numbers straight
Unicode’s September 2025 announcement says Unicode 17.0 added 4,803 new characters across the standard and brought the total to 159,801 encoded characters. Only eight of those additions are new emoji characters.

Where Unicode 17.0 fits now
Unicode 17.0 is a historical release rather than the newest standard. The Unicode Consortium announced Unicode 18.0 on September 16, 2026. Apple Core’s postponement means it should be evaluated against that later release, not retroactively described as a Unicode 17.0 addition.

How to identify the correct emoji version
- Start with Unicode’s “Emoji Recently Added, v17.0” chart.
- Check the chart’s exact name and code-point or sequence information.
- Look for whether the row is a character, sequence or variant.
- Then consult the device or app maker’s own compatibility notes for implementation timing.
This order prevents a preview item, a variant or a platform illustration from being presented as a newly encoded Unicode 17.0 character.
