“Evo Android virus” is not an established Android malware family in the official sources available for this guide. The name comes from user reports of security-scanner alerts labeled “Android:Evo-gen [Trj]” and similar wording. A label on its own does not prove that an app is infected, and it does not prove the alert is a false positive. The practical response is the same in both cases: identify the flagged app, run Google Play Protect, follow the action it gives for that app, and check whether the alert comes back.

What “Evo” and “Evo-gen” actually refer to

Searches for this topic turn up people describing a warning on a specific app, such as a social video app, that names “EVO GEN” or “Evo-gen [Trj]” as the threat. Those reports document how people phrase the warning. They are not classifications verified by a security researcher, and no authoritative definition of the label was found. Until a scanner vendor publishes an analysis of a specific sample, “Evo” should be read as an unverified detection name rather than the name of a known Android virus.

Google’s own explanation of potentially harmful applications (PHAs) explains why the same app can behave differently from one device to another. Google says an app is classified as potentially harmful because it contains malicious behavior, and that its impact can vary with device variables such as the Android version or connectivity. That general explanation does not confirm any particular Evo-gen warning. See Google’s PHA guidance for the classification itself.

Google’s malware policy defines the term broadly: “Malware is any code that could put a user, a user’s data, or a device at risk.” The policy lists the harms it covers, including compromising device integrity, gaining control of a device, enabling remote-controlled operations, transmitting personal data or credentials without adequate disclosure and consent, distributing spam or commands, and defrauding the user. These are the categories a real threat would fall into, so they are useful for judging a warning, but they do not tell you which category, if any, applies to an Evo-gen alert. The categories are described in Google’s malware categories page.

Check the alert before you act

Before removing anything, write down the details of the warning. These details decide whether you can get a real answer from the app developer or the security vendor, and they make it easier to tell a persistent threat from a one-time flag.

  • The exact app name shown in the alert, and the package name if you can find it (for example, in the app’s details page or your app list in settings).
  • The installed app version, which you can read from the app’s details page.
  • The security product that issued the alert, and the full detection text as shown, including any bracketed tags.
  • Where the warning appeared: during installation, during a scan, or as a notification when you opened the app.
  • Whether the app came from Google Play or from another source, such as a website or a file you sideloaded.

If the app came from a source you do not recognize, treat the warning as serious until you have checked it. If the app is from an official store and is widely used, a false positive becomes more plausible, but you still need to confirm it with a scan rather than assume it.

Run a scan with Google Play Protect

Google Play Protect is Android’s built-in app security service. Google says it checks apps on the device regardless of where they were downloaded, scans daily, and allows you to start a scan yourself. The exact menu location depends on your Google Play Store version and your phone’s manufacturer, so look for Play Protect in the Play Store’s menu or in your phone’s security settings.

  1. Open the Google Play Store app and find the Play Protect section. On many phones it sits under your profile icon in the top corner.
  2. Start a scan of the device. Google documents this as a user-requested, on-demand full-device scan.
  3. Read the result for the specific app you recorded. Play Protect may show a warning, remove the app automatically if it is classified as a PHA that Google removes that way, or disable the app.
  4. If Play Protect disables the app, note that it stays installed but cannot be used until you re-enable it or remove it. Google says the app’s associated data may be recoverable, but the data is not guaranteed to be.
  5. If the app is still present and you no longer need it, uninstall it through your phone’s app list.
  6. Run another scan afterward and check whether the alert returns for the same app.

Play Protect’s protections are described in Google’s on-device protections documentation, and the general service is described on the Play Protect developer page. Google’s consumer Android security page also describes daily scanning and the ability to disable harmful apps. Device and regional availability can vary, so the options on your phone may not match another person’s screen exactly.

If the warning comes back

A warning that survives a Play Protect scan and the removal of the flagged app is a reason to take the next step. Use the details you recorded:

  • Contact the app developer with the app name, version, and the exact alert text. A developer can confirm whether the app contains the flagged code or whether a detection is incorrect.
  • Contact the vendor of the security product that issued the warning, with the detection name and the version of the scanner you used. The vendor’s team can explain what the label means in its own system.
  • Compare the result with a second scanner only as a question, not a verdict. Two products can disagree, and the sources available here do not establish a ranking among third-party scanners.
  • If the phone shows signs of compromise, such as apps you did not install, unexpected charges, or persistent unwanted pop-ups, back up the data you need and contact your phone maker’s support. A factory reset is a last resort and should be done only after backing up.

There is no Evo-specific removal sequence in the official guidance. The steps above are the general Android process, and they apply whether the alert is accurate or not.

Protection going forward

Google documents real-time checks for apps installed from outside Google Play, which can warn about or block an installation. Keeping apps to official stores, reading the permissions an app requests before you grant them, and removing apps you no longer use reduce the number of places a flagged app can hide. None of these steps replace a scan when a specific alert appears.

Scale figures and what they do not show

Google’s 2025 report on the Play and Android app ecosystem gives two current figures. Google says Play Protect scans more than 350 billion Android apps every day, a service-wide figure from 2025. Google also attributes more than 27 million new malicious apps identified from outside Google Play in 2025 to real-time scanning. These numbers describe the scale of Google’s protection work. They are not counts of Evo detections, and they do not show whether a given app or alert belongs to that set. The Google 2025 security report has the full context.
