There is no public Samsung tool that issues a definitive “genuine” certificate for a phone. What you can do is compare the identifiers on the device with your box and purchase records, confirm warranty and service status with Samsung for the country where you bought the phone, and run Samsung’s diagnostics to check that the hardware and software work. Together these checks catch many problems, but none of them is a single proof of originality on its own.
Step 1: Read the identifiers on the phone
Start with the phone itself. Samsung’s US support article “Find your Samsung phone or tablet’s IMEI, model, or serial number” describes where to find the identifiers:
- Open Settings, then tap About phone.
- Note the model number, the serial number, and the IMEI. On dual-SIM phones there can be more than one IMEI.
- If you can’t reach the settings menu, dial *#06# from the phone app. Samsung notes that this code works only when the carrier supports it.
Menu names can differ by model and software version, so if the labels don’t match what you see, look for the closest equivalent under the device information section. Samsung also lists the original box, the carrier account, the sales receipt or contract, and Samsung Members as places where the same identifiers can be found.
Step 2: Compare the values with your paperwork
Match the model number, serial number, and IMEI on the phone against the box label and the purchase record. Samsung’s guidance is that these identifiers help ensure a device is not counterfeit, so a mismatch is a clear signal to stop and investigate before you rely on the phone.

A match is useful, but it is consistency evidence only. Samsung’s pages do not describe a universal public lookup that independently certifies a phone as genuine. A matching IMEI can still belong to a device that was altered, refurbished, or resold, so treat the comparison as one input among several.
What each identifier can and cannot tell you
- Model number identifies the device model or variant. It describes what the phone is supposed to be, but it is not a unique certificate of origin.
- IMEI and serial number are unique device identifiers. They are the most useful values for comparison with the box, receipt, and Samsung support records. They do not, by themselves, confirm authenticity.
- Carrier records show how and where the phone was activated. They can confirm a sale or activation history, not manufacture.
Step 3: Check warranty and service status for your region
Warranty and service coverage depend on where the phone was bought. Samsung’s US article on viewing warranty and coverage details says that coverage and support options vary by country or region. Start from the Samsung support site for the country of purchase, enter the identifiers there, and confirm what coverage is listed.

If you go through a repair request, Samsung’s US repair guidance says that if service is not available at your current location, you may be directed to the country where the product was purchased. Plan for that if you travel or bought the phone abroad.

Step 4: Run Samsung Members diagnostics
On supported Galaxy devices, Samsung Members includes diagnostics that test hardware and software function. The US article “Check your Samsung Galaxy device status and run diagnostics” describes this feature. Availability and menu paths vary by model and software version, so open the app and look for the device status or diagnostics section on your phone.
A passed test tells you that the tested functions are working. It does not tell you whether the phone is genuine. Use diagnostics to check condition, particularly for a used phone, and use the identifier comparison to check provenance.

Comparing the three checks

Samsung’s own wording
Samsung’s US support article on IMEI and serial numbers says: “These identifiers help ensure that your device isn’t counterfeit and can also help you find it if it’s lost or stolen.” That sentence explains why the identifiers matter. It is not a promise that an IMEI lookup certifies a phone.

If the details don’t match or the seller can’t explain them
- Keep the listing, receipt, order confirmation, and all messages with the seller.
- Photograph the identifiers on the phone, the box label, and any paperwork before you change anything on the device.
- Contact Samsung support for the country where the phone was bought, and ask the seller for a written explanation of the mismatch.
- Do not post a complete IMEI or serial number in a public forum or listing. Share it only with Samsung, your carrier, or the seller when needed.
If you are buying a phone, judge the seller and the listing separately from these device checks. A good identifier match does not make an unreliable seller trustworthy.
