You can connect to Netflix through a VPN, but that does not guarantee access to another country’s catalog. Netflix says a VPN may make your device or network appear to be somewhere else, and may limit what you can watch to titles it licenses worldwide. If Netflix blocks playback, its suggested troubleshooting is to turn off the VPN and try again.
What a VPN can—and cannot—do for Netflix
A VPN routes your internet connection through a server and can make your connection appear to come from a different location. Netflix says this may affect which titles appear: while connected, you may see only shows and movies Netflix has worldwide licensing for. Netflix advises disabling the VPN if you want to see titles available in your region. Netflix’s VPN help page explains the restriction.
That means a VPN is not a reliable promise of access to a particular national catalog. A provider’s setup guide can explain how to connect, but it does not establish that every server, device, or catalog will work. Netflix’s 2016 explanation said its licensing was territorial and that it would continue enforcing geographic rights; that statement is historical policy context, not evidence of a VPN’s current success. How to connect through a VPN
The simplest route is to use a VPN app on the device where you watch. ExpressVPN’s setup guide describes app use on computers, phones, tablets, smart TVs, streaming devices, and some consoles. - Check that your VPN app is available for the viewing device and that you have active Netflix and VPN subscriptions.
- Install the VPN app and sign in, following the provider’s instructions for that device.
- Connect to a server location, then open Netflix and check whether playback works.
- If Netflix displays a VPN or proxy warning, use the troubleshooting steps below. You may need to disconnect the VPN to watch.
When to use a VPN on your router instead
If your TV or streaming device cannot run a VPN app, configuring a VPN on a compatible router may route that device’s traffic through the VPN. Router setup is not suitable for every home network. Setup can be more complicated, compatibility varies by router, some app features may be unavailable, and speeds may decrease. Check the exact router model and VPN instructions before changing network settings.

Fix the “using a VPN or proxy” message
Netflix’s troubleshooting guidance is to check whether a VPN is active, disable it, and retry. This also applies if a VPN is built into another app: Netflix notes that antivirus software can include an active VPN. - Close Netflix, reopen it, and try playing the title again.
- If the message remains, use Netflix’s fast.com connection test and check the client country it reports, as Netflix recommends.
- If you are traveling or using a VPN intentionally, decide whether to continue without the VPN or reconnect knowing that Netflix may restrict the available titles.
Can you watch Netflix while traveling?
Netflix’s guidance is framed around the location the service detects and the titles it can show there. A VPN may change the apparent location, but Netflix may then show only its worldwide-licensed titles. If you want the titles available in the region Netflix associates with your connection, follow Netflix’s advice to disable the VPN. Netflix Help Center

Live events and ad-supported viewing
Netflix says VPN connections are not supported for live events or for its ad-supported experience. If you are trying to watch either, disconnect the VPN rather than expecting a different server to resolve the limitation. Netflix’s VPN guidance
