Alabama was scheduled to visit Mississippi State in Starkville on Saturday, October 3, 2026, with an 11 a.m. Central kickoff. In the pregame preview published October 2, the Associated Press described both quarterbacks—Alabama’s Keelon Russell and Mississippi State’s Kamario Taylor—as unbeaten first-year starters in the Heisman Trophy conversation.
Why Russell and Taylor were in the Heisman conversation
“Keelon Russell and Kamario Taylor have unbeaten starts and unquestioned spots in the Heisman Trophy conversation,” the Associated Press report by Henry Sklar said on October 2. That was a pregame description of their starts, not a prediction of the award or a final-season assessment.
The case in the preview rested on strong early passing numbers and undefeated starts. Through their teams’ first four games, both had completed more than two-thirds of their passes. Taylor had thrown more touchdown passes, while Russell had the higher completion percentage. Each had two interceptions.

| Kamario Taylor | Mississippi State | 69% | 1,192 | 14 | 2 |
Taylor’s 14 passing touchdowns were tied for the most in the Football Bowl Subdivision at the time of the AP preview. The comparison captures their production to that point; it does not establish a forecast or an overall ranking.
