ULX is Garry’s Mod’s group-based administration system: it adds console commands, chat commands, and a graphical menu for moderation, player control, utility work, and optional fun effects. Install it together with its required library, ULib, then restart the server completely. From there, ulx help lists the commands available on your server, ulx menu opens the administration GUI, and users can be assigned to groups with the Groups tab or ulx adduser.
What ULX is and how its commands work
ULX is an administration addon for Garry’s Mod. Its permission model is group-based: each user belongs to a group, groups receive command access, and immunity rules determine whether one administrator may affect another. This lets a server owner separate routine moderation from high-impact operations instead of giving every staff member unrestricted control.

ULX commands can be invoked in three ways:
- Server or client console: enter
ulx command arguments. - Chat: enter
!command argumentsin game chat. The exclamation mark replaces theulxprefix. - Graphical menu: run
ulx menufrom the console, then use the available tabs and controls.
The command list is installation-dependent. Core ULX provides the administration framework, while additional modules can add RCON, utility, chat, or fun commands. Always run ulx help on the actual server before relying on a command name or argument order.
Install ULX and ULib correctly
Workshop installation

Subscribe the server to both collections or otherwise install both Workshop items through the method used by your host. Installing only ULX leaves its required library missing and can prevent initialization.
Classic addons-directory installation
For a manual installation, extract the addons so Garry’s Mod sees the ULX files under its normal addon tree. The expected structure includes:
garrysmod/addons/ulx/lua/ulib/modules/ulx_init.lua
garrysmod/addons/ulx/lua/ulx/modules/fun.luaThe exact archive may contain additional files and folders; do not flatten the archive so that the lua directory is buried one level too deep. A common mistake is ending up with a path such as garrysmod/addons/ulx/ulx/lua/..., which the server will not load as the intended addon.
Restart the server fully
After adding or replacing ULX or ULib, perform a complete server stop and start. A map change is not sufficient. The project explicitly requires a full server restart after installing the files because the Lua modules are loaded during startup.
- Stop the Garry’s Mod server process.
- Confirm that the process has exited rather than merely changing maps.
- Start the server again and wait for it to finish loading.
- Join as an account with console access and run
ulx help.
If the command is unknown after a full restart, check that both addons are in the server’s active installation, that the folder nesting is correct, and that the server is loading the same instance you edited.

Discover commands and open the ULX menu
List the commands available on your server
Run:
ulx helpThis is the safest command reference because it reflects the modules currently loaded and the permissions visible to the executing user. Use it after adding a module, changing a group, or upgrading ULX.
Open the administration GUI
Run:
ulx menuThe menu provides a graphical route to user and group management and exposes commands that the current account is allowed to run. Many administrators bind ulx menu to a convenient key through Garry’s Mod’s normal key-binding system; choose a key that does not conflict with gameplay controls.
Translate between console and chat syntax
For a command named command, the forms are:
ulx command arguments
!command argumentsDo not type the ulx prefix in chat. Conversely, typing !command in the server console is not the console form. Argument order still matters in both interfaces, so use the help output for the command or the official command reference for the installed version.
Add administrators with groups and permissions
Use the Groups tab
- Open the menu with
ulx menu. - Open the Groups tab.
- Select the group that should receive access.
- Add the connected player to that group.
- Have the player reconnect, or otherwise refresh their permissions if your server setup requires it.
The GUI is useful when you need to see groups and connected players together, especially during initial setup.
Use the console command
The command-line form is:
ulx adduser user groupReplace user with the player identifier accepted by your ULX version and group with the destination group. If a name contains spaces or is ambiguous, select the correct player through the menu or use the identifier format documented by your installation.

Understand superadmin authority
Superadmin is ULX’s highest user group. The official project description gives this group access to all commands, the ability to override other users’ immunity, visibility into log messages hidden from ordinary players, and the ability to grant or revoke command access with userallow and userdeny.
Because superadmin can change the permission system itself, reserve it for the server owner and a very small number of trusted operators. Give moderators the narrowest group that covers their duties. A group that can mute or kick players does not need access to RCON, script execution, or permission-management commands.
File-based fallback
ULX also mentions data/lib/users.txt as a file-based fallback for user assignments. Treat direct file editing as an administrative recovery method rather than a routine workflow: stop the server before editing, keep a backup, preserve the file’s syntax, and restart fully so the change is loaded.
Targeting, immunity, and command authority
Every ULX action has two separate permission questions: may the executing user run this command, and may that user affect the selected target? ULX’s targeting system supports one player, several players, everyone, or a group, while immunity prevents a lower-authority administrator from acting on a protected higher-authority user.

- Scope: one target, multiple targets, everyone, or a group.
- Authority: the executor’s group and immunity level.
- Effect: moderation, movement, communication, utility, or visual/fun behavior.
- Persistence: a one-off action versus a saved group or configuration change.
Before executing a command against multiple players, verify the resolved target list in the menu or help text. A broad selector combined with a movement, communication, or punishment command can affect the entire server at once. If a command reports an immunity failure, changing the target text will not solve it; a user with sufficient authority must perform the action or the group policy must be changed deliberately.

Organize common ULX workflows
Moderation actions
Core ULX installations commonly expose moderation commands through the help system. Use ulx help to identify the exact kick, ban, gag, mute, slap, jail, or related command names and argument order in your version. A moderation workflow should identify the target, state the reason where the command supports one, check immunity, and confirm the result in the server log.
Chat invocation is convenient for routine work, but console invocation is preferable for sensitive actions because it keeps the command out of public chat and makes copy-and-paste auditing easier. A GUI is useful when selecting among similarly named connected players.
Movement and player-state changes
Movement and state commands can disrupt active gameplay even when they are not punitive. Use a narrow target, confirm the player identity, and avoid running a command against an everyone selector unless the effect is intentional. Temporary movement or visual changes normally end with the current action or session, while group assignments and permission changes persist until they are changed again.

Communication commands should be scoped carefully. A silence or deafen action applied to a group can remove voice or chat access from more players than intended. Document the reason in your moderation log and remove the restriction when the incident is resolved if your server policy treats it as temporary.

Braces in the documented forms indicate an argument such as a message or URL; angle brackets indicate a required value to replace. Do not paste the bracket characters unless the command’s help output explicitly requires them.

- Keep URL-executing and RCON-like commands out of general moderator groups.
- Use a separate, audited group for permission management and user promotion.
- Do not grant superadmin merely to solve a temporary permission problem.
- Prefer a specific player target over a broad selector when testing a command.
- Review logs after commands that change server-wide state, redirect players, execute scripts, or alter network-visible behavior.
- Back up ULX user and configuration data before major group changes or resets.
Troubleshoot ULX commands that do not work
“Unknown command” or no ULX output
- Confirm that both ULX and ULib are installed; ULX cannot operate without ULib.
- Check the addon folder nesting and verify that
ulx_init.luais in the expected path. - Perform a full stop-and-start restart, not a map change.
- Run
ulx helpfrom the server console to determine whether ULX initialized. - If only an optional command is missing, verify that its supplemental module is installed and loaded.
Chat commands do nothing
Use the chat form with an exclamation mark, for example !command arguments, and omit the ulx prefix. Then test the same action from the console as ulx command arguments. If console execution works but chat does not, the issue is likely command spelling, chat-hook behavior, or the player’s permission rather than the addon installation.
“You do not have access” or immunity errors
Check the executing account’s group, the command’s group access, and the target’s immunity. A user can be allowed to run a command yet still be blocked from targeting a higher-immunity player. Use the Groups tab or a superadmin-controlled permission change instead of repeatedly retrying the command.
The menu does not open
Run ulx menu in the console rather than chat. If the command is unavailable, resolve the installation and restart issues first. If the command runs but the interface is incomplete, compare the loaded ULX version and optional modules with the files installed on the server.
Use the official documentation map when syntax matters
The ULX documentation repository separates installation, configuration, backup and restore, reset procedures, targeting, tips, third-party modules, user management, and the complete ulx-commands.md reference. Use the targeting and command-reference pages when you need exact selectors, argument types, defaults, or permission requirements; use the backup and restore material before changing users or groups in production.
